Location: Placerville, CA.... You know, the only place on Highway 50 between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe the you find signal lights. Above the fog most of the time and I can see the stars of the Milky Way 8 out of 10 nights. Kinda cool.....

Ok - two questions:

1) what's with the girl with the clown face bikini ? I like it but not sure what that has to do with LBJ speeches?

2) Bullwhip Griffin? Ever see the movie? That character missed the mark. Never heard of him. (Be a great S&M pseudonym though!)

Oh right, let me just hop back to 1967 and get that answer for you.

Could be Steve....thought the old architecture was really cool.

Like everything else in our society - architecture has been in a decline, unfortunately....people just don't give a rat's ass about style. It's all about convenience and making money.

Look at this POS building....

The first Publix Super Market in Winter Haven, Florida, circa 1940. It now exists as a thrift store.

I used to (for the past 3 years) drive past this on my way to work, but I just moved, so now I don't.

I love the old interesting stuff. There was a LOT to look at in San Fran when I was there earlier this year. Houston, OTO, have very little interesting architecture. There is some, but most of it isn't even 100 years old yet

This is one of my favorites. If you are close enough to the top, you can see that there's a bunch of red and blue in the embellishments at the top. Inside is cool too.

Entrance of one of the Houston Chase branches.

and another of my favorites, the Bank of America building. The entire outside of the building is red granite. Even the sidewalks around the block are red granite.

The whole thing, even the high rise portion is topped with the "spires"

I like the classics as well, Steve.

Bank of America....I wonder how much of that red coloration is from their customers' blood?

Architecture by Julius Shulman...

Hey Baz,

I met Shulman for a few minutes ( A hand shake and how are you type of small talk ) when we did the cabinets, furnitures, and the finish carpentry on the restoration of John Launter's Chemosphere about 10 years ago. He came with a bunch mucky mucks and took a bunch of photo for the owner, Taschen of Taschen publishing. Fun, but lost lots of hair on that job.

That's cool Jeff. Great story except for the hair loss part!

I work with a local architect here who does a lot of similar designs - he's a bit eccentric at times but extremely talented. Sometimes it takes years and years for someone like that to open up to your ideas and input but when it happens it makes you feel pretty good. Overall I let them have their way - it's easier and usually turns out fine.

Publisher Benedikt Taschen says of the iconic 1960 home he bought in 1997 and restored, "It's the responsibility of the owner to preserve it for future generations because a house like this doesn't belong to one or two people: It belongs to mankind."
