Interesting. Either I'm misremembering or Heller was confused. I thought the tail gunner character was complaining about the long tube he had to climb through in the event of bailing out.

My dad flew those over to Korea. C-119, 'Flying Boxcar'. Was based at Niagara Falls AFB.

Well, in a B-25, there was a very low crawl space over the bomb bay to get from the rear compartment where the waste gunners and the tail gunner were up to the front of the aircraft. Once past the bomb bay it was quite open as can be seen here. The tail gunner sat in the seat at the far end.
