Calling BAZ! Do you know what this is? The plant sprung up in my yard during the fall. It didn't look like a weed, so I assumed it was a bulb of some type and let it grow. I walk back for the first time in a couple weeks and WOW! After 9 years at this house, this is the first time it's bloomed.

Craig:

Clivia miniata - aka Kaffir Lily

It's rare to see a RED variety...the standard variety is ORANGE.

I have some at my place that are the YELLOW variety that came from Monrovia.

They only bloom once per year and are kind of a novelty.

I like them because I think the name is cool.

:)

Here's an Internet pic of the ORANGE variety in a mass setting....

Kaffir Lilly? Thanks Baz. I knew you would know.

I walked around that back area and found another one with a different color (not as healthy tho). I wonder why they decided to come up and bloom this years? if they had bloomed before, I certainly would have noticed them.

I looked it up again to refresh my memory and they are supposed to do better in some shade. Maybe that's the difference with yours - the red is more shaded.

One reason they may not have bloomed before is perhaps they hadn't matured enough.

At any rate.....those red ones are stunning!

Here's a Monrovia link to the yellow variety that I have....they refer to them as a "Belgian Hybrid Bush Lily"...but "Kaffir Lily" is the more accepted common name.

What up, bro?

I see you sold everything and picked up that yacht you were telling me about.

Just let me know when you can drop by to pick me up. The weather's perfect for a Bermuda run. Charleston will be close enough. I'll have plenty of food, scotch, soda, beer, and girls.

That's not a yacht, he's on a low budget Carnival Cruise Ship.
