I built a set of custom wheels for Eric Heiden back in 1981 IIRC.
He was so strong he'd twist rear wheels until the spokes eventually pulled through the rims.
I built a 4 cross wide hub with 2.0 double-butted ss spokes, and stainless washers under the nipples. And laced it extra tight.
It was a good mix of strong and flexible.
