Ok, does anyone know why Vegas had louvers on the trunk? I did a search but found nothing. I remember when rail cars were open as we used to see them on the tracks where I grew up on their way from Flint to Canada. I was always told that it was because of kids throwing rocks at them. Hmmm.

I suspect it was a styling clue used to pull in former Corvair owners. Also in that market segment was the VW Beetle which had to be an influence.

This is what I found, looks like they had a function, but perhaps not a critical one.

Kids and other threats. Transients (hobos) would break in and ride inside the autos.

Studebakers also had them for flow through Ventilation. The grills above the tail lights were vents
