I rode standing up on the seats as a kid. I did not have that fancy contraption. Just my mom's arm. She would throw out her right arm if she hit the brakes hard. It was an automatic reaction.

Yeah, Dad owned four impalas (three that I remember and drove in).
His first love (and first new auto)...  Then...  And then...  And then...  Sadly, I only got to drive the last two...as far as he knew.

Location: Placerville, CA.... You know, the only place on Highway 50 between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe the you find signal lights. Above the fog most of the time and I can see the stars of the Milky Way 8 out of 10 nights. Kinda cool.....

My Mom had one of these when we were kids. One day she was picking up my sister and I after school, we were about eight or nine years old and climbed into the back tailgate area, no seat belts of course. The school was in a hilly area (Toland Way Elementary in Los Angeles).
As she backed out of the drive the brakes failed and we went shooting down the hill going backwards, My sister and I had a front row seat. I can't imagine what was going through my Mom's mind but she skillfully maneuvered the car (backwards) into a tall bushy hedge next to the Sparklets plant. My sister and I just bounced around with no injuries.
