We used to love to ride down a steep hill... use a driveway as a ramp to launch ourselfs into the neighbors ivy... one time when I hit the driveway I got my foot stuck in the spokes of the front tire and I went head over heals into the ivy... no injury.
We measured the distance of our ramp jumps in sidewalk blocks, not in feet...

Across the street from our house was a wonderful place called Winder dairy.

it was a dairy farm, was private property and we were supposed to stay out.
But you try telling that to a 12 year old.

They had a concrete feed storage building, looked kinda like a tilt-up building with no windows or doors, just wide openings. And it was two story. And big.

Well we managed to get up on the second story and were riding our bikes around inside this huge concrete building, pretty cool.

One of the neighbor kids who was with us was a little older but not all that bright.

So we convinced him that if he were going fast enough he could ride right off that second story and would land really soft on the ground, if he were going fast enough.
Imagine his momentum carrying him so that instead of falling downward, he's glide and land soft like an airplane on a runway.
He bought it.

So here he comes riding as fast as he could go on that sting ray with banana seat and sissy bar and ape-hangers, and off he goes.

Next thing ya know, he's on the ground screaming and we're hauling butt to get away from the scene of the crime.

He got a really cool cast on his leg and we all got grounded for a month.
I know, not fair.

That dairy farm is long gone, replaced with more houses. but the company is still around

Talk about an art form, those lights and that grill are painted onto a flat fiberglass shell.

2017 RUF CTR

Hey, who parked the old Porsche in the middle of the show? Actually this is an all-new car designed and built by German Porsche tuner RUF as a tribute to its 1987 Yellowbird 911, which was the fastest car in the world at the time. Underneath its old-school style bodywork lurks a high tech carbon fiber chassis with an integrated steel roll cage and crumple zones. It's powered by a 700 hp 3.6-liter flat six that RUF says is good for a 225 mph top speed, beating the original's 213 mph mark. Thirty examples will be made to celebrate the anniversary at a price that's yet to be announced, but will surely be high enough to rival its top speed. (RUF)

That said, it's still a great place to live compared to many other beach towns. But not nearly as nice as before the real estate people went bonkers and developed so much of it. Here's just one example...in the photo below....which two POS structures stick out like a sore thumb compared to the existing native architecture. That's right...the POS Hampton Inn that was allowed to be built right on our island's main street and that other huge POS at the top of the photo 1 block away from the main ramp to the beach for that main street. The 7-11 is right across the road and gets enough traffic as it is. This place gets gridlocked traffic-wise with the least little event they have and let me tell you the past 5 years it seems like we have events every other week. Every Tom Dick and Harry is trying to get in on the action.....sheesh....you have to really know your back roads around here to navigate during those times.

They've also gone crazy with traffic lights and cross walks...most of which have those lights that light up and it's illegal to go through them while the lights are on even though the pedestrian has already reached the other side.

We're on a barrier island with only 2 bridges across the Intercoastal waterway and one of those is a draw bridge so that gets a little tricky.

All that said.....I live 2 blocks from the ocean so screw the traffic if I want to go surfing I just go. It's a 15 minute walk to our Inlet where we usually have the most consistent surf.

There's a ton of places you could live in Florida other than here that are nice. Savannah is also a cool place. It just depends on what you want in a lifestyle.

This is the Ponce De Leon Inlet, where the surf is the most consistent. We're on the south side, where you see all the cars parked. The one good thing the county did was turn the whole area into a park. You can see the boardwalks in the second pic. It backs right up to our Coast Guard station too.

Thanks Baz, two blocks is schlepping distance for surf boards or scuba gear....

Sent you a PM.

Huh??? Two blocks? You wouldn't schlep your board or gear two blocks for good surf or diving?

I lugged my board up and down this one mile long trail almost every day for 15 years. It was well worth it (about half the days...often flat or blown out)

Hahaha,

I was referencing his comment of only living two blocks from the beach and if traffic got too bad he would hike the two blocks to the surf. My intent was that I too would walk the distance if I was "fortunate" enough to only live two blocks from the ocean. Only in my wildest dreams could I live only "two blocks" away..... if that was the case, I would live under water and I finally would have that excuse to finally buy that rebreather, and I thought owning a P-car was spendy.

In reality, like you, I would schlep my scuba gear anywhere over any distance to get there. Even uphill, in the snow both directions to the beach. Our little Costco hand-truck had logged more miles hauling our gear back and forth than I know, which is a good/great thing.
