Boeing has been exploring blended wing / lifting body concepts for as long as I was there, probably longer. They have great economies of operation, but once they get to passenger airplane size, other considerations start to factor heavily. Passenger comfort, both physical and mental, are huge factors. You want them as close as possible to the roll center, but then they don't get windows and ingress/egress gets a lot harder.

Birthed in Long Beach by Robert Leibeck. Ridiculously more efficient than a conventional tube and wing design. I worked adjacent to those folks in the day and always hoped to see it become a real thing. Consolation was seeing early scale model flights at El Mirage. I still have some of the promo materials.

I wonder if virtual environments would calm the cattle: Screens with expanded views and/or enhanced informational maps.
People already sit in cubicals all day when their minds are focused.

I'm imaging you could look through the forward camera at 'pilots view', or look down and a road/city grid with labels could be overlaid, or go in virtual map view, or go into a plethora of geography quizzes, or destination information, or various screen savers, or games and movies and internet, etc. Anything to distract people with customization of space and make them feel less trapped and maybe more educated when they reach their destination.
The outside world could be brought inside virtually.
