Agreed on both counts. Likely called an aircraft. Better yet, more like a manned missle
Dropped from the bomber, wick is lit, accelerate to Mach 6.9, glide back and land.

That, is a very brave man! The plane may be slow, but jeez. What's he doing, re-gapping the plugs?

i think he's trying to prop start the engine. i have a fair bit of time in pipers and taylorcrafts. that's the only thing that makes sense.
it just occured to me to google the N number. some discussion on pilot forums. half think prop start. the rest say photoshop. there could be another pilot in the rear seat holding her staedy. impossible to tell.

Checking the oil. ![]() Most non geared fixed pitch airplane propellers "windmill" when the engine is not firing as long as it is moving at decent airspeed. IOW, if the engine quit and he got the prop to stop by slowing his airspeed, he would simply just need to put the nose down to regain some airspeed and the prop would start turning again on its own.

The one of the piper and guy trying to hand start while airborne is old as the hills. It was taken years before anyone knew what Photoshop was...

He shuts down the engine and the announcer says he is out of gas. I believe he even opens the door and steps out like the dude in the photo. Then he puts it into a dive ( "oh no he's going down ! ") And fires her back up. Corny as all get out - only surpased by FiFi and the Black Baron.

I agree, it's hard to get the prop to stop unless you've shut the engine off at a spin entry. (Or suffered a catastrophic failure, in which case you might as well stay inside) That said, I would MUCH rather stand the airplane on its nose than climb out of the cabin. There must be story to that photo. . . which we will probably never know!
