We have a couple of reciprocating flare gas compressors now that collect the excess gas, scrub it and compress it and send it into the fuel gas system to be burned in the heaters and boilers in the process units. That burning is extremely clean compared to the flares as the heaters have precise O2 control, huge catalytic converters ($250k each and we have dozens of em), and continuous emissions monitoring devices that send measurements through a modem to the AQMD at all times.

But.... during times of process unit upset or some other time when unexpected excessive amount of gases are vented off (like a power outage), the compressors get overwhelmed and the extra gas is routed to flare and burned. We just didn't have the capacity to recover all of it during extreme flaring. The new AQMD rules starting January 2009 changed all that, now there are big fines for flaring. Really big fines.

With these compressors we can handle all of it up to 120,000 cfm which is more than our computer modeling scenarios predict will ever be required. We run one compressor all the time and the others kick on one at a time automatically as required.
