Brown Pelicans. A great come-back from near extinction after the ban on DDT. When I moved to Texas in 1967, I never saw any anywhere. Then in about the 1990s I was sailing in Galveston Bay and they were everywhere. I posted this image on the previous page.

Mountain based therapy session May 13, 14.
One of my usual destinations.
My brother turned me onto this area 45 years ago now, also one of my earliest multi night backpacking trips... lots and lots of nights up in this area since then.
Not much has changed, the trees are taller... I'm not.

This trip was solo, my pack came in at 35 lbs... the potential Northern Light displays caused about 8 more pounds of gear to get loaded: Nikon, tripod, extra battery. One beer.... ok, ok the beer was going even without the extra digital fun.

After dropping down the hillside and across the dam here's one of the first view points

Fitbit tracker paired with my phone GPS has the route spot on and shows 7.2 miles- seems generous on mileage.
I put this at 5 to 6 miles one way.
I was moving very slow coming out, managed to chowder my left heel on the way in despite moleskin padding and boots that I thought were my friends... had to really baby it on the way out.
