Beech Party 2023 Tullahoma, TN. If you are ever in the area, the museum and grounds are definitely worth a visit.

A quick get-away to NOLA for a nearby annual family reunion and then the Gulf Coast.

First stop, the National WWII Museum. I’ve been trying to get here for several years. And I don’t know why it’s in the Big Easy, but many of the famous landing craft - so crucial to our invasion of Europe - were built here by a guy who’d been successful building shallow draft boats for the swamps.

That famous landing craft. God bless those who faced such horrible circumstances when the ramp was lowered.

Regardless of why it is where it is, it’s a world class museum, and quite an asset to the city.

And they were built because a US Marine named Victor "Brute" Krulak, had witnessed the Japanese landings in China, took pictures with telephoto lense.. they got filed as "sent in by some Nut in China"

Krulak built a model of the Japanese boat design and discussed the retractable ramp approach with boat builder Andrew Higgins who then took the ramp idea into the Higgins boat.

good book called Brute http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1697892754.jpg

And after WW2 he was instrumental in doing early adoption of Helictopers to hte USMC

Chesty Puller gave the Marines Infantry training, motivation and inspiration, Krulak gave them the Amphibious and Air Assault capabilities they have today.
His son later became USMC Commandant.

Hey man - I didn’t know any of that. Thanks for the great addendum!

Off down Hwy 90 - the Gulf Coast Highway (and a great Nancy Griffith song to boot!) to Biloxi, Pascagoula and ultimately, the Gulf Coast aka The Redneck Riviera

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1697907646.jpg

The day before I left I paid $6.99/gallon for gas near Los Angeles. Ultimately I saw it as low as $2.74/gallon. Unbelievable.

Happy travels. Enjoy your trip. We keep sending photos of gas prices to friends back in CA for giggles. This was a few days ago in Texas:

Headed to Panama City? That's what we called the Redneck Riviera, lol.
If you stayed on Hwy90 through Mobile, you would go through the old Bankhead Tunnel then across the causeway where you would see the USS Alabama battleship. Yep been down that trail many times as a kid before I-10 was complete. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...618b138094.jpg
