On the subject of WWII landing craft.......

The fellow who runs the local Miracle Ear office (Bruce) and I had a discussion about a year or so ago when I took Mom in for some hearing aid help.

Turns out the founder of the Miracle Ear company was a decorated WWII vet named Ken Dahlberg.

Quote:

Ken Dahlberg, founder of Miracle-Ear, was an American through and through. Growing up on a dairy farm in Wisconsin, he milked cows and shot squirrels as a kid. At 24, he joined the Army Air Corps. Ken flew cover for the D-Day invasion in Normandy and shot down 15 German planes to become one of America’s few Triple Aces. He was also shot down three times, escaped twice and ended the war in a POW camp in Moosburg, Germany. Ken was awarded several awards for his service, including the Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

I ended up getting his book and it's really great:

One Step Forward : The Life of Ken Dahlberg

OK that part has nothing to do with WWII landing craft but on the subject of WWII, Bruce also mentioned the LST production on the Ohio River Evansville, Indiana plant. I think it had something to do with where he first started out with Miracle Ear (Bruce).

After a quick Internet search I found this informative video:

<iframe width="720" height="480" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/gOebepHX1tA" title="The LST Story Evansville Shipyard" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen></iframe>

And a chart depicting the various landing crafts is included in this informative article:

https://www.britannica.com/story/types-of-landing-craft-of-world-war-ii-infographic-spotlight

The landing craft in David's New Orleans photos above is the 35' LCVP (Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel)

More info on the only remaining operational LST (325) on the water located in Evansville:

And it's history (a good read):

One of the reasons we had this conversation in the first place is because Mom is a WWII US Navy veteran - something that sometimes initiates a conversation whenever we go somewhere....

Ken Dalberg also had a small but somewhat significant role in the Watergate scandal. He has an interesting place in US history.

(I couldn't find the "what are you fixin today" thread)

Background: The second story was apparently built without a permit or inspection by the PO. That's a tangent in itself. My second-gen experienced builder said "I'm scared" when working on it. And there was a lot of work. He did many things very well. But some not so well.

The upstairs porch is the cantilevered floor joists and originally floated. The original railing was easily kicked over during demo. It was super sketchy. I wanted corners made of strong 4x4 going from ground all the way up. The only problem was the base was not well prepped and eventually settled and sank. And that pulled the cantilever porch down with it.

I noticed the sliding door frame gaps were bowed in the winter which meant the wall was flexing under load. Some occasional creaking and popping sounds upstairs from the walls on either side of the porch. The previous work was a long time ago and any settling should have resolved. Walking outside on the deck felt like going downhill especially this year.

There is a 1" drop next to the house and probably 3.5" total.
I've got a laser level somewhere but just eyeballed it.

Tips:
-Use a rip saw blade for big cuts. Fine blades only make smoke and burnt wood.
-Have quality long sawzall blades (both wood and metal) because you will need them.
-Have all your outdoor rated fasteners purchased in advance instead of reusing old screws.
-If a bolt is stuck, a little jacking might make it easy to remove. Conversely, release jack if it's stuck. lol.

Black C-plates covers the splices and prevents side movement in three directions. They don't look too bad but they were the only thing the store carried.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1698360697.jpg

The original stub posts on the right were not even touching before. They were bolted with an inch air gap which doesn't support anything.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1698360722.jpg

There is still a 1" bow in the center from these two sinking posts at the front.
There is only one single post in the center of the whole deck! (With no bracing to the edges).
And to think those three posts once held up six to eight adults at a party....
There needs to be more and sitting on concrete sono-tubes.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1698360882.jpg

The stair will also need to be lifted to height but taken off first. There originally was a 2x4 thingy there before so I built these. Today was about 70deg but after tomorrow it drops down into 40-50deg Michigan fall weather. Not enough time for a complete rebuild. One corner still needs to come up 3.5" total but I at least squeezed 2" in there for now. I will re-do in the spring but at least it's better for now. Much less bounce and feels flat.

Is that what is being harvested now? On my way from Charleston to Kershaw, SC, I saw a lot of dust out in a field, and as I got closer, I realized they were harvesting something. There was another machine that looks like a huge hopper, that look like it was waiting to be filled up.

Small farming tangent about usage and titling a property correctly:
https://www.zerohedge.com/political/they-bought-ranch-help-veterans-then-came-unexpected-green-tax-bill

“Then last year, 2022, just a few days before Thanksgiving, I received a call saying it was a courtesy call because we were going to get a tax bill for just over $92,000.

The Pennsylvania Farmland and Forest Land Assessment Act is a state law that allows qualifying land devoted to agricultural or forest use to be assessed at lower than fair market value through the Clean and Green land preservation program. It's intended to encourage property owners to keep most of their land in agricultural, open space, or forest, and not develop it. The program provides real estate tax relief and is favored by owners of large tracts of land.

Sorry for the tangent
