My son wants one of those. How does he do in the heat of the summer out here in L.A.? How old is hea nad what are the life expectancies on a dog that size? I've had Labradors for awhile now and they're pretty big but nothing like that guy. I here Danes only live 7 or 8 years. Don't know if that is true or urban legend.

Unfortunately Dave, that's true(for the most part). The larger the dog ;the shorter the life expectancy. We hope to have him around for a while....He's the perfect dog. Overly protective @ times, yet gentle with anything smaller than him...and No he does not like the heat. He's an Indoor dog so during the summer we try to walk him early in the morning and late @ night

Dan, True about the larger the dog, the shorter the life. The way I heard it, is that Great Danes have the same size organs as smaller dogs. Since the organs are smaller, they work harder and therefore the organs wear out quicker. I grew up with Great Danes and they all lived for about 8 years. It's hard, just as you are getting used to the dog, they die. Larger dogs are also more pron to bone and arthritis problems.

That said, when I have the yard space (you have to have a big yard) I would definitely get another Great Dane.

Thanks Guys. My Lab/Dalmation mix, Dudley is 13-1/2 and he probably won't make 14 judging from this weekend. He is really struggling. My pure Lab, Sooner is frankly, freaking huge at just about 100 lbs and he isn't overweight believe it or not. He's the largest non-fat Lab I've seen. So, I can't see him living as long as Dudley. I don't think I could stand losing dogs after only 7 or 8 years. It's bad enough when they go longer.

The Bentley antithesis.

Nicky, five pounds of Mastiff. (Yes, he suffers from Little-Dog-Syndrome.)
