You can get the Isle of Wight concert on DVD, it's called Blue Wild Angel.. and its just unbelievable.. a great version of Machine Gun(my fave is the Fillmore East in '70) but it's the best version of Red House, probably cause I love that Gibson V he uses..

Also, come to think of it, I'm not a big Sting fan, but his a capella version of "Roxanne" from the Secret Policeman's Ball is great.

Yeah but on Machine Gun, Isle of Wight...around the 4 1/2 minute through the 7 minute mark Jimi almost makes the guitar talk.... There is a cynicism or sense of disillusionment in Jimi's comments between songs..
Another interesting piece of music is Jimi jamming with Traffic in concert, done around May or June of 1970...

I feel old. I went Tuesday night and saw Alice Cooper in concert(again)..incredible show..I have seen him six or seven times over the years. I just can't get into this "new" music. Alice would have to be my all time favorite.

My favourite Jimi moment(well, one of them) is "Drivin' South" off the BBC sessions.. you can tell he is wayyyyyy loud in their little studio and the umbilical cord feedback relationship between his strat and the Marshalls is just, I dunno.. some sort of celestial event.
At Isle of Wight I attribute Jimi's offstage and between song attitude to the fact that all the people wanted to hear was Purple Haze and Voodoo Child when he had all this great new material - and for him to act like a crazyman and light his ***** on fire.. He was getting deeper and deeper into the music and didn't really dig that whole schtick anymore.. he wasn't very happy with the sound crew either.. after "In From the Storm" he just walks off and pitches the strat to the ground - no time for applause or chit chat.. he's too pissed off and tired.. plus he was playing at a festival in Sweden 12 hours later we need a Jimi thread..

I listen to Jimi Hendrix & Grand Funk Railroad on my IPOD cutting grass with my riding mower and I'm in my own world.
He's not classic rock'n'roll but Bob Marley is on the top of my listen to while I cut the grass list.

I was lucky enough to see Hendrix three times before he left, way way back in the sixties. It was an Experience, for lack of a better word, that I will never forget. Truly a master. Another real mind-opener was seeing Cream back around 66 or 67 at the Grande Ballroom in Detroit. that show was truly a Religious Experience ! That free form British Blues Band changed me forever. Word has it that there will be a Cream reunion possibly in 05, as soon as Jack Bruce recovers from his liver transplant sugury. Clapton nixed Bruces efforts for a reunion a few years ago, but word is he has promised Bruce a reunion pending a recovery his 03 transplant operation. To this day, nothing is quite like a late night run along the Ocean in the Cab, blasting " I Feel Free " don't know, but it has always worked for me. Doug

Did I miss a mention of Deep Purple? Machine Head is a "must own" album...
Ditto to Cream. I've lot track of the number of times I've played White Room, Sunshine, and Crossroads at a gig. And back in the day we used to do a rolicking version of NSU and Outside Woman Blues. Always wanted to do Deserted Cities of the Heart and Swablr and.... |

Unchained - VH
Eddie's guitar work on that one just does it for me. Still...he's no JH. Live at Winterland...wore that one out. How about Peace Frog - the Doors. "There's blood in the street up to my ankles". Sympathy of the Devil is one of my all-time favorites. Might have something to do with the fact that Beggars Banquet was released on the day I was born...
