Marc,

I still ride an old school Cannondale M900 as well. I recently put a Fox F100X fork on it though, so its good enough for me! Getting the right head set was a PITA thanks to Connondale using that goofy size...

Have you checked all the deals going on? What type of rider are you? Weight etc? Is there anything that you must have?

I've been riding for over 20 years now and I've had a LOT of bikes! Right now I only have 2, 1 mtb and 1 road. The mtb is a 2000 Intense tracer that I built myself. My road bike is a Cannondale r2000si.

Yeah I'm checking around everywhere...trying to find the one that jumps out at me.

What kind of rider? Well, I like pain... so I like climbs...but I also like downhill speed...soooo... cross country?

6'1, 175

I really want a hardtail, dont know why... kind of like why I really want a 911... steel, almn, ti it doesnt matter...

My two options are either:
a) Buy a quality used ride.
b) Upgrade my current ride to all XTR and drop $350-400 on a front shock.

I was hoping maybe there was a pelican who was looking to unload his ride...

Man, you've got good tatse in rides.

Imo-Moots is probably the best (I rarely say "best") bike made. I wish I had one. Do they still make bikes? I need to find a new frame builder now that Fat City is closed for business. My Yo Eddy is getting a little tired. Moots would be my next choice.

I agree with ou on the fact Airborne and Lite's are CRAP!
I do like the Moots.. the bikes are well **** you could hang it on the wall and just stare at it ..

While I'm currently running the original "Pepperoni" rigid fork I do have, for you old-schoolers, a Lawill Leader 3 on the bench waiting for new bushings.

Anyone remember the Lawill Leader suspension fork???

Bill, what headset are you using with your Fox fork?

Not all Airborne bikes are crap.

And I assume that you know that 95% of the bikes out there are NOT made in the US, and that a vast majority of those are made in china?

BTW, pretty welds don't always equate to a quality product.

Marc,

I have 2 of the Peperoni forks lying around still....I had a real old first generation Rock Shox Judy, but after looking at the Fox, I had to get one.

I am using a Chris King Headset. They make one that wil convert your 1 1/4 to a 1 1/8 if you can stomach the cost. You can also get some shims as well. I actually have the shims and an 1 1/8 headset as the 1 1/4 to 1 1/8 were on back order (and the 1 1/8 was free with the the Fox).

By the way, thanks Todd (Nostatic) for pointing me towards Speedgoat, they were great to work with, as I also had to convert my brakes. The guy I spoke with did not try to sell me the most expensive parts made, and they hooked me up with a nice new stem as well......

You should feel how light the bike is....its a blast to ride and the Fox doesn't bounce up and down, if you haven't ever tried one, you should, smile.

Yup, yup.

Isn't the Lawill a linkage/parallelogram fork like the Girven fork on the above BlingFlex, I mean ProFlex ?

Yup...made by Control Tech. Lower four-bar linkage with the shock mounted in front of the head tube. Once I get it back on the bike tonight I'll post a pic.

What was the advantage to the linkage-type fork? Less stiction? I remember seeing this fork in magazines, and I think Supergo may have sold these forks at one time.

The linkage design allows the steering angle to remain constant during the shocks stroke.

Heh, heh, heh...I said stroke...

ummm...yeah, I do know where most of them are made. I was "int he industry" for awhile. But I know where mine are made: Steamboat Springs, CO.

You're right about pretty welds, and there has been much discussion of single v. double pass welds with Ti. The only thing I can say is that I've owned a number of Ti bikes (including an original Teledyne road frame), and Moots is the best I've seen. And it is head and shoulders above any Airborne frame. Period. And it has a soul...kinda like an air cooled 911.

hmmm....

and yes, Chris and Beth (at Speedgoat) rock.

I agree that the early airborne frames weren't the best, but anything post-2002 is fairly good quality. While I may not like the business practices of that particular CEO on occasion, I think the products are very good today. It's true they started out as mail/internet order only, but I'd venture to say now that 95% of their sales are thru shops nowadays, there is no advantage to someone ordering a bike online from them as the pricing is fixed (supposedly).

As far as the "soul" thing goes, I hope that isn't some dig against a 944 owner, because I love all porsches, not just one particular model#. I don't see how a moots bike has any more soul than an airborne bike. Both are designed by people who have passion, the only difference is that one is welded up in the US and one is welded in China. Both are single-pass welds.

Of course, this is assuming we are comparing a moots 3/2.5 frame to an airborne 3/2.5 frame. Now, when you get into the airborne frames that are 6/4 seamless Reynolds tubing, there really is no contest IMHO. Having spent a lot of time on many ti bikes, I can tell you that 6/4 seamless gives a better ride feel and is less flexy than 3/2.5 no matter how you shape or manipulate the 3/2.5 tubing. Compared to the standard seamed 6/4 that Litespeed has used for years, it still offers great power transfer yet doesn't beat the hell out of you on rough roads. I no big fan of Litespeed either. BTW, people who yell and scream that Litespeed is better than airborne because they are all made in Chattanooga TN..............the majority of Litespeeds are made in china nowadays as well. That's why they went to selling complete bikes only at their dealers instead of giving the option of just buying frames. The complete bikes are assembled in china and shipped to the US.

BTW, I am in the industry.

Eric----------screw you too, pal! MUAHAHAHAHAHHA.
