Audi A90: Decent car/worth buying?
Asking for co-worker who's looking into a 1993 Audi A90 w/ 105k miles. It's for his 17 yo as a first car.
Any experience here? Major problems? I assume parts may be pretty pricey. Asking price is $4k. TIA

$4,000 will by a lot of Camry in decent shape and a new set of tires. And on-going repair bills will be manageable.
A broken 12 year old Audi with a $1,000 repair bill will have the kid borrowing dad's car.. |

The older Audi's are a joke. Electrical nightmares for starters.

As the owner of an 87 Audi 5000, RUN! Tell your co-worker to get something more reliable. No fun in having a first car will not always be on the road. Some suggestions: 80's Mercedes diesel, any Volvo, or something like a Corolla.

There was a lot of them around where I was stationed in England. They were not the most reliable thing on the road. I think a Volvo is the way to go! Safe and reliable!!!

Or a 911 (see pic)!
Most of the kids at my school have Jeeps, Pontiacs, or Volvos. Our family had a 94' Camry that we sold a couple of years ago. Great car, but slow oil leaks at 140k miles. Common Toyota Camry problem. One of my dad's co-workers and his son are restoring a 914. You can get them pretty inexpensive these days. Anyway, here I am after working on my 911. I am currently 15 (almost 16) years old. It is my first car. I am a proud owner.

If he's looking for a German sedan, $4K can buy a decent 3 series, I think. The ones from the late 80s are fairly bulletproof, easy to work on, and reliable.
Of course, those are all relative terms. And you'd have to start with a solid, well maintained example. But I'd take my chances with an older BMW over an older Audi any day. On the other hand, like the others said, $4k can buy a lot of reliable Camry, etc. |

I second the above!! If $4K is the budget, Look into late 80's to '91 BMW e30's (3-series) Opt for the six /5spd and look for I's or IS models. The 'IS' is the top-o-line option; leather, sport suspension, lower ride height, posi rear, etc. Rock solid, 250K with basic maintenance, safe and last but certainly not least is they still look cool!!
The market on these car is very friendly. You should be able to purchase a late 325I or IS under 150K miles, nice condition and still have some cake left over..
