996 vs. Diamond Necklace
My wife is turning 50 this year (still hot) I was going to buy her a 996 Cab. ( it was actually for me too and she knew it)
She does not want it! I bought her a diamond necklace instead $$$$$$$$$$$, but much less than the 45K i was going to spend. The great thing about this negociation is if I am patient and wait a few years till the kid is done w college she has agreed to let me buy anything I want. Let me see GT 2?, Twin Turbo? Your thoughts?

I think that there are many people who fit into either of two camps.
One of which would look at a highly refined performance vehicle that you could use everyday, such as the 996, and say "what a colossal waste of money." The other of which would look at a purely ornamental piece of manufactured, contrived sentimentality, that will spend most of its time locked in a box, such as a diamond necklace, and say "what a colossal waste of money." But good luck with the GT2. JP

Why is it, if you purchase a gift for a woman it has to be an impractical item such as jewelery, but when they buy for us guys, it is always socks or ties?
She NEEDS a new kitchen, but that would be practical and out of the question as a gift, she WANTS diamonds; they are impractical but to her, more desirable. You have cash for one or the other. What do you do? You, on the other hand, could really use that new router table or drill press. Either one, you ain't fussy. What do you get? a gift certificate for a men's clothiers. Ain't that just dandy..... Your wife's decision was for a gift that pleases her alone rather than one that both of you could enjoy. Simple as that. I don't see that as a negotiation at all. You may not survive to see the time you actually get to cash in on her promise, life is unpredictable and too short to waste on vague "promises". Worse, is when the deal is phrased "If you love me, then...." which is a conditional form of love. That is not love at all; it is a form of control. I may be misunderstanding the situation, and if so, forgive me. Just speaking as one who thinks that both genders have to give a lot in a truly successful two sided relationship.

I had a g/f whose birthday was coming up, and I asked her what she wanted; she said "Get me something crazy and expensive that I don't even need!"
So I signed her up for radiation therapy... I bought another g/f a ring, but she told me she didn't like it. I told her "What do you mean you dont' like it? You picked it out! It's not my fault that you can't work that little crane better..."

I need to defend the wife here. Firstly, I have been married 25 years and in those 25 yrs. my wife has never asked for or expected anything and when we first met I was 19 yrs old bagging groceries and making 100.00 p/w. I am now 46, retired and very comfortable. In addition to my future GT 2 and or 997 twin turbo I have a race car with a spare engine and transaxle. So needless to say I spend plenty on myself and she doesn't , so I figure I got off really easy in regards to the diamond neclkace which I choose to do for her. My wife has never used the words "if you loved me you would". She drives a 1991 Mercedes and just told me yesterday she could drive this car until the day she dies.

When you come right down to it, it doesn't matter if the gift makes no sense to anyone - but her. If it makes her happy that's all that counts. I imagine that there are a lot of wives who just don't understand "the old Porsche thing" yet they sacrificed so their mate could have one.

Minkoff, I believe you once mentioned you invest in real estate. If so, are you still in real estate?

Yes still in Real Estate, but I just manage my income (commercial Real Estate) I work only a few hours a week.
Work out of home and check the properties once a week. Its really not work.
