Yoooolooooosooooloooomiiiiiiooooooo.....Whatcha want...a cupa expresso...well stepa up to Tabbys....

Since I bought my machina I don't buy coffee out....I make one or 2a cups of Latte everyday...I usually buy my beans at Trader Joes and have tried most of the different types...What ever beans I use..it ususally winds up tasting like hot choclate...a nice mellow flavor...

Lately I have been grinding some dried orange peal in my little krups grinder and adding it to the coffee I ground in the mazzer...to give an orange flavor....nice change of pace...

I agree that the fast food joints are getting with the program on coffee, I liked Carl Jrs. (haven't been to other FF but I've seen the ads) A while back I joined the Illy Home Espresso deal and I liked it. A couple of years ago I saw a Nespresso Machine and never looked back, great prices, service and oh yea, espresso. Maybe not as Cache' as other machines but definitely above average.

Dad makes good cappucino, and every once in a while, I'll be down at my parent's house early enough to score a cup.

I have one of those Senseo coffee machines... not bad if you put enough flavored creamer in it. And there are only three different roasts to choose from. Hopefully someone will come up with better flavored stuff for it, but it's good enough for a mornin' cup o' joe for me!

Care to talk about coffee prices? I few years ago, coffee was dirt cheap; free refills and all. Then there was a coffee shortage and the price went up and up. No free refills.

As I understand it, there's no shortage of coffee beans since countries like Viet Nam and Kenya are now producing tons of it. Coffee supply up? Yep. Wholesale coffee prices depressed? Yep. Retail coffee prices down? Nope. Up. Wonder why there's a Starbucks on every other corner?

You guys that pay $4.00 for a cup (8 oz.) of coffee can't be complaining about gas prices too, can you? Thanks, but I'll make my own Mocha-vanilla, amarillo, Bavarian hazelnut and Danish coconut butter rum, almond chocolate, southern pecan double tiramisu latte frappachino ... with whipped cream.

Worst coffee in the world has got to be the stuff that comes out of those vending machines in Japan - ugh.

I make it at home but still enjoy having one out - unless it's crap in which case I feel very very ripped off knowing I could have just done it myself.

Look at the coffee machine at work. Does it have a hot water tap off the side? If so, you are in luck!

Go to Starbucks (or Target) and buy a French Press. It's a simple device. You put coffee in the bottom, pour hot/boiling water on top, stir, wait a couple of minutes and then use the press filter to push the coffee grounds to the bottom. Bring your own fresh ground coffee in each day, or keep a bag of ground coffee in the freezer for a week. Far cheaper than buying cups of coffee and usually far fresher, than the swill served at work.

The plantation coffee coming on line now from Viet Nam, Brazil & etc is not the good stuff.. I work with a coffee trader and their gross revenues are way down. The supply of the real good stuff is much more limited, and that is reflected in the prices..

So inspired, and working at home today. So off to the coffee machine I go... The pics are from camera phone and hence crappy...

Double shot, on its way (not an especially flash one, the machine had only barely warmed up).



But looks ok in the cup (5oz cup - only little)



Adding milk to make a "latte" although it is way smaller (at 5oz total) than anything you get in Starbucks.



The bag in the background is the coffee beans (Altezano = local roaster, exceptional. Their house blend). "The Milk" is the milk... The machine is a La Vibiemme Domobar Super (based around an E61 grouphead) and a Mini Mazzer grinder. None of it is mine - I am house sitting for my parents for 5 caffeine laden months.

Yes, I drink the last of the pot at home. Actually, I drink the whole freakin' thing 'cause wifey doesn't like coffee. I tried espresso once. BLECCHH!!! You guys can have it all.

This is a red letter day. We agree, on a subject very dear to my heart. Although, to be contrarian, it is my considered opinion, that Paris offers more consistently good coffee (as in near to heaven) than one can find in Italy. (I was there recently as it happens Shadowfax, in St Peters Square to see your new man announced to the crowd.)

To the gent that suggested New Orleans has good coffee. No, it doesnt, in my experience anyway. Having once spent a week in NO then travelling on to Paris, that first espresso in a cafe in rue de Rivoli opposite the Hotel deVille, was indeed a moment of deep contrast. ))

A, ahem, Freedom Press and an espresso pot are all thats required to make good coffee, IMHO. Very lo tech, very user dependant. And good coffee of your choice, ofcourse. Milk is for people who dont like coffee.

Stuart, NO has great coffee. It is not an expresso town, but the coffee is great. Having spent several years working for a top notch coffe company I will say this about expresso. The alkaloids that cause coffee to be bitter tend to be relased in high volumes when the brewing temperature exceeds 180 degrees. This is why Bunn (the standard) and all other quality brewers operate at slightly less than 180 degrees. The brewing temberature of expresso (steam) is 212 dergees. This and the extra fine grind of the beans makes expresso significantly more bitter than coffee. If the little old man (or anybody else) makes un-bitter expresso he is indeed a wizard.

As to the "gourmet" beans, the coffee business works like this. The buyer goes down to Columbia (where most top quality coffee is grown) & negtiates with the farmer for certain fields or maybe his entire crop. The next time the buyer sees the coffee it is at his dock. He goes throughout the ship getting samples. He roasts, & tastes all the samples. He then decides wether to accept the coffee & release payment or not. Next year he goes back to the same farmers he delt with this hear. Now what all these "gourmet" brands want us to believe is this: the farmer who has fed his family dealing with a particular guy for years is selling him the bunk. We go down there & buy 20 sacks of "the good stuff" that he only sells to us. BOOWLSHEEET
