from what I have been told... the lines at the Fema, Social Security, food stamp, welfare and anyone else offering free money, clothes, food etc., are very long but the lines offering jobs are empty. one guy was heard to say that if he got a job, he'd have to pay his child support, so no job for him. I know people in industries in this town who are begging for skilled and unskilled labor but can't find the people. why work when you get gov't handouts? some people need handouts, some people take them just because that's what they've always done. my friend was handing out ice, food and water to evacuees here in town. they had to start checking IDs because of all the locals taking advantage and we had hardly any hurricane damage. getting any more than a small percentage of those people to actually work for living? good luck! and BTW, I am a very poor person. I just happen to work all the time for the things I want and need.

Let's hope at least some percentage of these people take advantage of the situation. I'll bet many have not been out of their immediate area. This may be a blessing in disguise.

Sure there will be abouse of the $2k card handout. But that will pale in comarison to the scum that started preying on the generousity of others. One of the first illegal activities were scammers setting up fake charities.

Many people stayed behind in New Orleans to protect what little they had. If even a small fraction of the $2000 helps to ease suffering, I have no problem with it. When you are trying to put out a fire, do you insist every drop of water hits the target? It would be nice, but very unlikely.

The "entitlement culture" of our inner cities is another issue entirely, IMO.

Actually, at least locally, there are people trying to find work. It isn't as many as it should be, but the lines here aren't empty.

I checked the mail yesterday, and no card. Where is my card?

Every drop of water, no. But I would expect hitting the fire with more than 10% of the water. That is about the percentage I estimate would be used in the manner intended.

If these A-holes had evacuated as told, no problem, if they hadn't been shooting at the military helicopters trying to drop off food and water to those too stupid to leave, they would have been there.. Point is, THEY HAD PLENTY OF TIME TO LEAVE, THE CITY OFFERED THE MEANS TO LEAVE, THESE A-HOLES RERUSED, AS THEY ARE REFUSING TO LEAVE NOW, let them die and rot, anyone that stupid (and already a burdon on those of us who pay taxes) doesn't deserve any help!!! YOUR CHOSE TO STAY, LOOT, LIVE WITH YOUR CHOICE!!!

(OK, to precise, it is probably true that many of the refugees didn't work, because many of them are children, elderly, and so on. I'm referring to the able-bodied adults of working age.)
Hey, Zach Pruett aka ZLP, I would like an answer.

You said "Most of them didn't work in the first place so I don't see these scabs of society running to get work.... With 30% of the city under the poverty limit how do you think they got there?" and I'm interested in where you got this fact.

$2000 Debit Cards Given to Evacuees by the Homeland Security Department...
.
Citizen tax dollars freely handed out as thinly-veiled hush money, near as I can figure.
.
I've been wondering lately just what will be the camel-back-breaking straw that'll precipitate a middleclass taxpayer revolt. Can't blame the career political whores, they'll carry on w/their deception/corruption/spending ways for as long as they're allowed to do so. So it comes down to us, the snoozing/apathetic electorate.
.
Free Trade Agreements that are not "free", technology for sale, outsourcing jobs, Bush's and the Power Elite's globalization wet dream, political whores on the take - pretending to not know about 20 million illegal immigrants raping the job markets as well as the local, state, and Fed. treasuries.
Gobs 'o billions here, hundreds of millions there. Pretty soon we're talking real money, eh?
Crazy-makin'.

I WAS aware that the city requested total evacuation, but I was NOT aware that they provided the means to do so...I'd like to understand that better...

I DID hear that peole were "invited" to the Superdome, as a last resort, but that there was no guarantee that it could withstand a Cat 5 storm, and that anyone entering should bring 5 days food and water.

I also read of multiple shootings, rapes, thefts and beatings INSIDE the Superdome.....one has to imagine that people were desperate...but rape??? I can be only so understanding....and rape is way over the line. The actual reported number of rapes was over a dozen...I wonder how many unreported? It is unfathonable how one or two bad apples could do so much damage...well, one or two didn't...much larger numbers did...and how were these scum seprated form the rest?? They weren't, were they?

I know someone with a home in a not so nice area, and I have asked her about her plans in the event of a storm.."Get out" was the response. It is impossible to actually live there and not know these basic truths:

1- you live under sea level
2- A big strom can flood your city, and your home...it happens regularly. A really BIG storm will do more......right?
3- When that happens, no plumbing, water, electricty, etc.
4- There was a BIG strom predicted many days in advance, and it was steady and aiming for your town.
5- There were chances to get out.

BUT...many didn't. But why then knowing the above, were they so POORLY prepared?? No excuse to have no food and water! I mean just go to the faucet a few days in advance and fill some bottles with water! No money needed! Canned goods ...sorry, but $20 bucks can buy some basic survival food, throw it in a bag with the bottles of water, the ax and get to the attic.

Look, I feel bad and the situation is horrific..way worse than people believed could actually happen, ....and the government from the local to the state to the national level needs to look unto themselves as this could have been handled better....

BUT, the victims themselves, (not all, but a too large proportion) have not exactly shown a whole lot of effort for themselves...just a lot of "why is it taking so long" complaints.

It smacks, I am sorry to say, of a very "Entitled" thought process.
