Look, this all wastes time, I'm sure they'll just deposit the $2k into our secret white man interest earning trust funds, the card would be redundant. So......if you get a deposit, you must be white, that's how you'll know.

Is the government going to provide credit card machines to the crack dealers too? That would make things a lot easier.

So what should be done? Create a large bureaucracy to micro-manage every purchase of these displaced people? Come on guys, lets get real.

Ahh... I see the logic: These people are poor, which means they are lazy. So, they don't deserve help. Also, there were looters in New Orleans, which means that no one from New Orleans should get anything, in order to minimize the chance of looters getting anything.

great stuff. Keep it coming, this is almost as much as when Tabs managed to tactfully combine a lack of compassion to Katrina evacuees with a reference to the Holocaust.

You think too much, they're black....we don't like them. It's that simple, get with the program, watch the news man!

I suspect you haven't spent much time around poor people; if you did -- and if you have any ability to look at their situation objectively -- you will quickly realize that nearly all of them are poor because they are (or have been) lazy when it comes to doing the sort of things necessary to lift themselves out of poverty.

There are the "working poor" -- I've been in that position myself -- but for such people, poorness is just a temporary condition that is corrected through hard work.

WTF do you know about who I have spent time around?!? Matter of fact I have spent a *****load of time with poor people, and view poverty as being a lot more complex than your simplistic, one dimensional understanding.

No.
You don't see the logic, because you are unable to filter the TIC comments, nor are you able to grasp the the real issue here. Plopping 2K into someone's lap, someone who has had no real financial responsibility in the past, because of thier 'situation' won't fix anything.
Here, how 'bout the multitude of lottery winners who have no money now, because thay did know what to do with it?
Same deal.
Sorry, didn't mean to spoil the fun.
Carry on...

Ok, I see the "and if you have any ability to look at their situation objectively" applies in your case...

Ah yes, the "lottery winners".

Sure, I see the point... some of the money is going to be misspent. Of course it is... a lot of my money is misspent.

But I'm bothered by the assumption that because they are poor they can't be trusted with money, or shouldn't be given the option to spend it as they see fit. Some people are poor because of misfortune, or because of a poor economy. Sure, some are poor because they are junkies or because they are irresponsible. But it's unfair, and inaccurate, to depict poor people as untrustworthy or undeserving. That's what's bothering me here.

It's not that they can't be trusted, it is the fact that they have no history of managing money, and will see the $ 2,000 as a limitless supply. They will burn through too much of it before they realize it is almost gone, look up, and be wondering where their next card is because they haven't gotten any necessities yet. Then we'll get to listen to all the rappers complain on TV that we didn't give each family enough money.

If we're going to spend millions of dollars, let's bring them what they need to get back on their feet. We can spend the same amount of money and ensure that the families are provided with what they NEED.

Oh, I'm white too. Does one of you have my card?

Lots of assumptions here about "them". There are plently of poor people who do an amazing job of budgeting, out of necessity. There are plenty of good, genourous and dependable poor people.

Many people bear the brunt of misfortune, just like many of us benefit from good fortune. Born into a good family and got a great education, great! Born in a ghetto and went to public school in a bad part of town? Sucks to be you.
