Going to Yokohama Japan - recommendations?
I will be in Yokohama on business for 10 days starting next week. First trip to Japan ever - luckily I'm going with a co-worker whose been there before. Anyone have experience and/or recommendations? I won't have much down time, maybe a Sunday and days after 6:00 pm.
Also I'm in the market for a new digital camera - should I buy one there or just pull the trigger here at Costco or Frys before flying across? Thanks! |

Bring a camera. Those days of cheap electronics are over!
Man, I wish I were going too. How is your liver? Hahah. They love to drink over there. |

Bring the camera. And lots of memory--CF and SD cards over there are much more expensive (on the order of 50% to 100% more).
Bring small gifts for anyone you may be imposing upon or seeing for a while (don't know about business-related though). California-related trinkets will work (we always bring AZ related stuff--especially good tequila). Bring a handkerchief to keep in your pocket--most public restrooms don't have anything to dry your hands with.

Pick up booklet on customs and culture of the Japanese.
Sheds a lot light on what not to do while in Japan i.e., hand gestures, expressions, protocol, where not to venture, security etc.

Yes, I've been to Yokohama. Yokohama has the largest chinatown in teh world outside of actual China. The food available there is outstanding. It's easy to find, maybe a few blocks from Yokohama harbor. Also, Yokohama has one of the tallest ferris wheels in the world. I have no idea why it's there, but ride it.
You'll be about 45 min. train ride to Tokyo. If you're interested in culture, you could ride over to downtown Tokyo station (can't remember name, but it's the big central one.) From there you're maybe 10 block from the main Buddhist temple, which is in downtown. It's a large complex, very beautiful.

It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. I am in Tokyo till the 23rd if you want to hook up. The food here is really really good. Also it is very hot and humid right now so come prepared for that.
Get cash at the Airport Citibank cash machine, your cash card will not work in any cash machines but Citibank and get a Lonely Planet guide book. alf
