Bad call, White Sox win.

Really bad call.

'89cab 10-12-2005 07:34 PM

terrible call. should have asked the third base umpire for opinion.

terrible call.

VincentVega 10-12-2005 07:44 PM

Is it still baseball season??

CJFusco 10-12-2005 08:50 PM

Probably the worst big game call since the "phantom tag" back in 99.

dd74 10-12-2005 10:09 PM

I merely say, in the utmost illumination, wisdom and love for the game:

WHAT THE ****?

Mrs. K 10-13-2005 05:33 AM

Such a bad call....the plate ump CLEARLY called the third strike and then the out sign....and they showed it over and over and over and it still didn't change.

And when they interviewed him he gave some LAME excuse that the ball had "changed directions" WTF does that have anything to do with your call, Blue?

Too bad!

chibone_914 10-13-2005 06:27 AM

Definitely one of the worst calls I've seen in baseball. I'm not even an Angels fan, and I feel bad for them. Just wait until the sox come back to so cali.......

juanbenae 10-13-2005 06:40 AM

AJ persinski (SP?) is a puke, i'd expect him to run after being called out. i am a sf giants fan and he was apparently a cancer in the club house last year, his only year in a giants uniform.

did you guys see the press conference with the umps after the game on espn? dude was not comfortable at all.

einreb 10-13-2005 07:14 AM

Suck it up ladies and quit your belly aching. It was perfectly obvious from my seats mid way up the upper deck behind home plate that the ball hit the dirt. :D

See... you don't even understand the rules. Its not about the mit. Its about the ball.

Actually, A.J. is a straight-shooter. S.F. has the most disfunctional clubhouse in the bigs. Pierzinski openly ridiculed the "Barry Bonds" rules; Bonds didn't show up for the team photo, doesn't work out with the team, travels separate from the team, had a private masseur in the locker room, his locker is twice as wide as every other players and he is not to be spoken to unless he speaks first. A.J. is direct and abrasive as hell, it was oil and water from the start.

ckissick 10-13-2005 09:09 AM

I didn't watch the game last night, and this morning I walked into the TV room, as my wife watched the news. I had no idea what had happened, and I saw 3 replays of the ball being caught by the catcher. I saw the ball "change direction", as the umpire said. I thought for sure the ball hit the dirt an instant before going into the mitt.

However, the ump could never have seen the ball hit the ground. It was surrounded by the mitt. The ump blew it by not being clear about the ruling. If the hitter can run to first, the ump has to let the team on the field know it.

How many times have I seen the catcher tag the runner after a marginal catch, just in case? Plenty. The catcher should have been more dilligent.

The catcher cannot see the umpire and is not expected to know when he has used a hand gesture to signal a strike. The umpire never records an out with a hand gesture. Never. An out is only recorded verbally by the umpire. In this case, the catcher thought he caught the ball cleanly (and he probably did), but he never heard the umpire record the out. Bad call? Yes. But the fact that the runner made it safely to first is the fault of the catcher and no one else.

I beg to differ with you!!!!!!!! I saw the replay so many times at close up views and the f^@king MIT hit the ground...which has NOTHING to do with the ball hitting the ground...which it DID NOT!!!
Just because I am a girl doesn't mean I don't "understand the rules"!! Besides...if you were BEHIND home plate...how could you see if the mit or the ball hit the ground...mmmmm????;)

Now because I DO KNOW the RULES....I totaly agree with this statement!

EdT82SC 10-13-2005 10:03 AM

I blame the catcher for not tagging the batter or throwing it to first because he "assumed" he was out. He never verbally heard the umpire say out, and if you dont hear it, the play isnt over.

You have a potty mouth.

Even your pitcher knew it was in the dirt. Thats the only thing that could explain the meatball he threw Crede on an 0-2 count.

wilke3169 10-13-2005 10:35 AM

I have no reason to pull for either team or to defend the call. I didn't see the call live or the replay but from what I understand that call gave Chicago the opportunity to win the game. It didnt win the game for them. Score was still 1-1 after the call. "J. Crede doubled to deep left, P. Ozuna scored" I do believe that was the act that won the ballgame.

I am so sorry if I offened any of you well spoken men and women on this board.

I see you are from Chicago...thus the "intensity" in your post.
Yes, I am from California and would like to see the Angels win...however I would also like to see the White Sox win since they haven't won since 1917? Right?

But I think we can play nice here, can't we?

I took offense at the fact that you don't think I know the rules of baseball. (that wasn't very nice)

Have a nice day :)

The other act that won the game was the heads-up play by A.J. by running to first when everyone else was getting ready for the 10th inning. The Sox deserved to win because they were smarter.

BTW, I don't like the Angels since they beat the Giants in Game 6 with a cheapy homer to shallow right. Go Sox.

No. It was a great outing by Buehrle, a lousy error on Josh Paul, a dumb pitch with an 0-2 count, and a nice shot by Crede to win the game.

Let's hope that the sox tank the rest of the series so that the curse won't be broken.

I was half way rooting for them until I saw that NONE of the sox admitted that it was a crappy call....once the game is in the books nothing short of an intervention from the head poobah will make it any different. Like the Pine Tar game.....

Geez, be honest and step up to the front and admit that the the call sucked....

I DO have to hand it to the heads up awareness the batter had in taking a run to first....what were they gonna do call him out? Smart guy, don't make the call any better though...it still sucked.

Back when I played ball.....I came across home plate, tagged it and then turned to watch the finish of the play...... One of the other team yelled "Tag him he didn't touch the plate"....surprised I instinctively lunged and was tagged well off the plate by the catcher.

Ump called me out....I protested and asked him if he saw me cross and NOT tag it....he said he didn't.....everyone on the field saw me touch except the ump....he called me out based on what I did AFTER wards.....

I truely believe that the ump blew it then AND last night by letting the subsequent actions dictate his call(s)......

Oh and the ball never touched the ground...it was in his mitt the whole fuchin way....

einreb,
I started this post less than 24 hrs. ago. Since then, I've seen the play at least 1600 X pi times. I have no idea what my point is. Why weren't you at the F&H last Saturday. Doesn't matter. Didn't want to talk to you anyway. Time to bring back the " Winnin' Ugly " tagline.
Go Sox.

During my sons last year of little league, the coach's son pulled the same crap. It was a game winning 3-run homer by a skinny little kid who had never hit a home run in his life. After the kid cruised past home plate, the coach's kid screamed that the runner from first missed home plate. Of coure the kid hadn't missed the plate, but the ump bought it. I'm pretty sure the coach put the kid up to it. Freakin' awful.

dd74 - It appears he was (unless there was another error called on him). I had to go look it up when you asked since I wasnt actually sure.

E - J Washburn (1, throw); V Guerrero (1, bobble); J Paul (1, catch)

I'd also like to note for the record that you're the only one that hasn't bit on my silly comments. I love the ChiSox. I'm really happy that they are in the ALCS. I'm happy that they are 1-1. I have to be happy about it because it may be the only ALCS series in my lifetime. What am I supposed to do? Watch Bears games? My comment about not coming to Anaheim was obviously sarcastic. As for the mouse... its sort of programed into us midwesterners that we go to Orlando. LA is only visited in 1 hour increments when my United miles can't get me a direct flight to Maui.

Mrs. K - I didnt even realize you were a girl. I didn't intend to question your knowledge of the game. I just didn't know why you would argue that the mit didnt hit the ground since its the ball in question. Then I sort of poked you a bit since you got so defensive. If you had seen where I was sitting at the game, you would understand that I was in no position to judge the call. Needless to say, they didn't replay it at the game.

Gassy - I sort of figured you had tougher skin than this. One year of winning for the BoSox has made you weak. That three game ass whooping is gonna sting for a while, but you'll be better for it. What you need to focus on is the Yankee 205 million dollar payroll of old guys that can no longer juice. They have many years of misery ahead of them. Sorry about not taking you up on the F&H/beer outing.

Mikez - Not that it matters, but hoping that the sox tank is a completely respectable position. I just dont share it. :D

Wow, this OT forum posting is tough work. T

Jay Auskin 10-13-2005 05:57 PM

Well said Bernie. I just happened to be sitting two seats from Bernie. He OBVIOUSLY was not out!

It's hard to explain this to people who have no idea how to say "Polish Sausage" or "Roosevelt Road".

Geez freakin' whiz....if this were the Cubs, everyone would be happy. But no, we blame their choking an entire series in the playoffs on a fan's interference with a foul-ball. Weak.

Is Anaheim a city?

There are TWO Disney theme parks!!?!?!? Wow, I love learning new things.

Yeah, there are two. One's the original (left coast), one's a swamp (right coast).

Bernie: "not biting on silly comment..." Is that a compliment or a slam? Just curious...

For my money, real fans get behind their teams. It's one thing I learned from the L.A. Times sports dept. Yeah, you write ridicule when your boyz lose (or do) stupid, but through and through, you support them through and through.

So I expect Chi-towners to be behind the game's outcome. I don't slam fans. I do, however, slam bad calls.

Einreb ,
How is it that you didn't even know I was a girl? My avatar is ME....and then there is the "Mrs." part???
Sorta obvious, I thought anyway.

Let's see what happens on Friday!

May the best team win...fair and square...so there is no fighting!

Hey whattya expect....he's from Chicago...all he thinks about is da Bears, da Sox/Cubs, da Black Hawks, da Bulls, beer and flank steak.....at least that's what SNL tells me.

M.D. Holloway 10-14-2005 02:08 AM

The game is played on the field, the ump is part of the field and the ultimate rule. Like it or not, he is God. Was it a bad call? The tapes say so but the game isn't played or ump'p according to the tape. It is a dynamic game with split decisions that have to be made.

I hope they never ever use replay the way football does. Some of the fun and allure of the game is contention and ridicule of the calls blue makes. It adds flavor to a overly commercalized tradition.

On a different note, it is nice to see another lady on the bored, Cool Chick and 12own911 et few al need some sistern. Welcome Mrs. K, and if I may say so, your husband has great taste in bathing suits.

Mrs K. - I had the avatars turned off, so I didnt see your ass shot. I'd still put the odds at 50/50 that you're a fat middle aged man, but I'll go ahead and give you the benefit of the doubt. ;)
