I've seen some amazing sites while in the sky, saw an indian sun once and a double circular rainbow once and some amazing shots of clouds. I wish I had pics of them. Several times they've been awe inspiring.

99.9% of Chicagoans could care less about Meigs. It was sort of cool to have, but generally considered a huge waste of prime real estate.

The bummer was Da Mayors excuse about potential 'terrorism' because of the airport. The shutdown was really just a political F.U. to both the feds and our state government.
I do not doubt that the average citizen would rather have a park or something there. The beauty of Meigs was that it provided a place for small business planes to land and do business right in downtown Chicago. Flying into O'hare then taking a taxi to a meeting is a royal pain and eats up lots of time.

An evening in Chicago for a private pilot, while not very important, is basically not possible anymore either. It probably costs $150 just to land at O'hare and if you are VFR, Chicago approach sometimes won't even acknowledge you.

The terrorist excuse was just ridiculous because removing a runway does not change the fact that airliners are still crossing overhead to land at O'hare and VFR traffic still flies the coast under 3000'. If I was the mayor, I would be more concerned about a minivan full of explosives parked in a parking garage than a Cessna 150 flying into a building!

I completely agree... and if i had a plane and lived outside chicago, that would have been an awesome way to come visit.

I still don't know why daley pulled that terrorist line out of his ass. he's usually a pretty straight shooter with crap like that.

In the end... i dont think it was ever in the long term planning of the city to keep it. Its being turned into a park of some sort with a wetlands area or something like that.

One of my "office"...

Me in the office. Note the Santa Claus tie for the holidays:

A Ford TriMotor I flew a while back:

An old Vickers Viscount I flew rock n rollers in for a long time:

The cockpit. Its "steam " powered with 4 Rolls Royce turboprops on it and the latest instruments from 1945 or so:

One of the reasons why I enjoyed flying the Viscount:

Sad news, did you hear about the Grumman Mallard that crashed yesterday? Everyone on board died when the wing came off in flight, 20 persons. Sad to hear, especially during the holiday season...

450k, yes its a new 604. Flew that one for 4 years until the owner retired (at the advanced age of 41!) and closed the flight department down. I flew this plane from the factory in Montreal to completion in Tucson when it was green.

That Mallard crash in Miami was horrible. Those poor people. Not to lessen the deaths of the passengers and crew, but its a shame to loose a beautiful aircraft like that.

I was furious. I woke up to go to work, put on the news, and saw those big X's on the runway...at first I thought something bad happened (terrorist related or something)...then they start talking about friggin Daley.

My mayor seriously disgusts me.

I don't agree Einreb and Handcock......

That's total bull***** what happened there. The entire freaking lakefront is a park. My God, we don't need anymore, at MY expense......

Our elected officials are supposed to represent us....and that bogus mayor went against the people!

Agree on both points. Losing a wing is something that we all fear, because there is absolutely nothing you can do about it, just ride it down.

My God, I actually agree with CC on a post! Its time to play the lotto! I hope that the day they carved up the runway will come back and haunt him. Chicago has paid one fine already and the Feds are after him to return millions he accepted to improve the airport. Hope they take it out of his hide...

Whoa CC!!

You and I are in total agreement that tearing up Meigs was the work of a madman. I only acknowledged Einreb's comment that some residents may have wanted something other than an airport there.

That moronic mayor did it in the middle of the night by cutting huge trenches across the asphalt. There is no control tower active at night at Meigs and if an aircraft would have attempted a landing, it could have been fatal. IMO, the mayor commited a criminal act and the FAA should have strung him up for it.

I fly past it every year on the way to Oskkosh and it was always
comforting to know that I had a place to land should I have engine trouble over the lake. Without Meigs, there is no safe place to land for about twenty miles of coast line while scooting up the VFR corridor over the edge of Lake Michigan.

PS CC, my last name is HANCOCK, NOT HAND-COCK
