One of my instructors told me of a guy that let his five year old son shoot a full-auto pistol. Man stood behind him as the boy fired. The boy pulled the trigger and the repeating recoil brought the gun up and the boy shot the dad mulitple times in the head and upper body. Firearms are fun, but you gotta have some sense.

That is just idiotic. Betcha there was a great big parking lot for all the mobile homes too...
Sheesh, makes me a little embarrassed to be this close to Oklahoma.

It sounds like some of you guys are having a hard time with this. I don't see anything wrong with it. As long as they are shooting at a range that can accomodate them, and safety rules are being followed, I say more power to them.
Stupid people hurt themselves every day playing with big kids' toys. Tragically, they hurt others as well. Why is it that when firearms are involved so many folks see it as somehow worse than when other equipment is involved? For example, I see lots of threads on here about track days where folks are having fun engaging in what is arguably an even more dangerous pursuit than this. Far more dangerous, actually. Yet I have never seen anyone call it stupid, hint that it's some form of trailer trash fun, or point out everyone they know about that has been hurt or killed doing it. Statistically, shooting is one of the safest hobbies out there. Yet every time some one gets hurt or killed, the hue and cry over it is deafening. I wonder if our beloved track days could survive in that environment. Hell, high school football would not survive in that environment.

I play paintball.
You only hear about paintball in the news when a bunch of hooligans (who don't actually play the sport) buy some cheap guns at their local Wal-Mart and go on a vandalism spree. You hear zero reporting on how the paintball community condems such actions. Soon after these incidents, you usually have a city council pass a law banning the posession or sale of paintball equipment in their town. The vandals go a town over to get their stuff, the previously law-abiding paintball players get arrested on their way to a commercial paintball field...

People have a right to do whatever they want, as long as it's legal, and I have a right to say I think their activity is idiotic. A group of people meeting somewhere in rural Oklahoma to expend thousand of rounds (and likely thousands of $$$) in order to watch a junked out Dodge Neon get "blowed up good" isn't my personal idea of a great time.
Sure they have the right to do it...and I have the right to make fun of them for doing it.

You've got it all wrong. If YOU don't like something, then YOU lobby lawmakers until they pass a law against it. When that doesn't work, you find a sympathetic judge and get him to rule on a "test" case, effectively making a law in your favor. You don't go spouting this "they have a right to do it even if I don't like it" crap.

I just fired a full auto machine gun for the first time recently I have to say I was pretty surprised by how it "walked" up. Never believed the stories about hitting the ceiling until I did it too. After the first few rounds, I knew how to control it.
I think I was about 5 when my dad started taking me to the range. Only time I came close to getting hurt was when I didn't have a rifle butt against my shoulder properly and the recoil ran the scope into my eye brow. I've come far closer to death plenty of times with bicycles, cars, airplanes, the beach, swimming pools, etc. Guns are one of the safest hobbies around.

I have fired one semi-automatic weapon (M-16), a few pistols and I own two shotguns that I sometimes shoot skeet with. I have never fired a fully automatic weapon, nor do I really want to.
And Shaun, I am from the Great Republic of Texas so I'm allowed to make fun of my own...just try saying what I did with a northeastern accent around here!!

Ha! San Antonio is for pu$$ies.
I used to live in Victoria, TX, now that's a rough and tumble, gunrack and pipebumper town! want to play the video game Defender in an arcade? Waiting in line, you're up next. No you're not! Not if some 10-year-old girl has a bigger knife than you do... she's next. true story, and sad to say I'm really dating myself there.
