I've had great luck with T-Mobile for years. My stepson just went to Verizon and switched back to T-Mobile after about 6 months.

Hmm, I have two phones. One is Cingular and has been great in the Los Angeles area. The other is T-Mobile and service is terrible.

It really depends on where you live. Talk to friends, co-workers, and especially neighbors. You might get great reception a mile down the road and nothing in your own home.

I just replaced my old phone that had verizon with a new phone with verizon and the coverage and reception has improved dramatically. The old phone I couldn't use at home, reception wasn't good enough. With the new phone I'm haven't had any problem, and reception is great with only one bar showing.

Nextel. They are pricey, but the service is outstanding. Could be because they think I am a corporate customer. I've never had a problem that wasn't fixed promptly. They've even contacted me when there was fraud on my account. Problem was solved before the bill arrived.

I am a legacy AT&T Wireless customer 'acquired' by Cingular. From what I can tell, the coverage and customer service have improved and I am satisfied with them. Equipment makes a difference - a modern tri/quad band phone will run rings around the ones from a few years ago. Most of the dead zones I used to suffer from (including my office, right in the middle of crowded Santa Monica) have full-bar signals now.

My legacy started with LA Cellular, that became AT&T wireless, that became Cingular. I blew it last year when I purchased a new phone/contract for my wife and got absorbed by Cingular. I should have got her on a separate account instead of the Cingular family plan. Meant new phones for both of us. Was hoping for some improvement in overall connectivity, but alas, signals are still dropped for no apparent reason. Latest greatest phones, still mediocre service. I think all cell providers are lacking the necessary towers to keep us connected at all times, even in the middle of town. |

Check Consumer Reports online for the wireless phone service survey they did last year. Different carriers did better in different areas. Verizon was number 1 in my area, and I am very happy with their service. It may be different in MA.

I have been a Verizon customer since they bought Airtouch Cellular and absolutely fantastic service. Dealt with Cingular for company cell phones and they are horrible. So much so that I just switched 6 phones to Verizon on Friday, phones arrived and numbers ported with new plans setup by Monday morning. Orders cases yesterday via email and one day later they arrived.
The only things I dislike about Verizon is their whole Get It Now program and the cost of ringtones and extras. I don't want to pay alot for all the cool little extras.

Have a Motorola RAZR phone and it works great with Cingular. The GSM tech works and works very well around the world. Also, I never get a phone from the phone company. It requires you to sign a new or extended contract. The last four years have found a new or used model that I like on Ebay or Craigslist and buy it there, sometimes for as little as $20. If its "locked" I found a guy in San Diego who unlocks them for $25-30, then they will work with any companies GSM SIM chip.

I heard a rumor that Cingular was changing their name back to AT+T. I was recently in a Cingular store and asked the clerk if that rumor was true and he said yes, said it was a name change only. Anyone else heard this?

When I moved, from what I gathered, there was now some sort of "partnership" between Cingular/AT&T, one call took care of both providers. I didn't give it much mind.....but in light of what you said, maybe AT&T bought out Cingular..... |

It works like this.
Cingular and AT&T (mobile only) merge in 04. This year AT&T (formerly SBC who own 60% of Cingular) buys Bellsouth who own the other 40% of Cingular. Cingular is AT&T again.
