first Tom, now Mel..

First Tom goes all whacko on TV, now Mel decides to take a swipe at Jews. Something in the hugely-overpriced water?

cantdrv55 07-31-2006 09:27 AM

"On the Anti-Defamation League's website, national director Abraham Foxman said the statement released by Mr Gibson did not constitute "a proper apology"."

In a statement on Saturday, Mr Gibson said: "I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested, and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable.

"I am deeply ashamed of everything I said and I apologize to anyone who I have offended."

He added: "I have battled the disease of alcoholism for all of my adult life and profoundly regret my horrific relapse."

Fukc the Anti-Defamation League. Sounds like Mel apologized just fine.

Moses 07-31-2006 09:29 AM

That really surprised me. What an idiot. I thought Mel was a deeply religious very traditional catholic. How does he reconcile such bigotry with his faith?

cantdrv55 07-31-2006 09:36 AM

What did he actually say? What was his blood/alcohol content? What led to his drinking binge that evening?

Rodeo 07-31-2006 09:37 AM

I wouldn't accept that apology either. It's not an apology, it's a PR offensive ahead of the really bad stuff about to come out.

gaijindabe 07-31-2006 09:44 AM

From today's NY Sun:

Orthodox rabbi, Daniel Lapin on Mr. Gibson, whom he considers a friend:

"While it's certainly true that alcohol betrays inner thoughts, those inner thoughts are not for any human being to criticize, " Rabbi Lapin said. "Only God should criticize our thoughts, and I don't know of anyone who doesn't harbor unworthy thoughts. My experience with Mel Gibson is that he's always been upright and honest and good with all his Jewish friends. In Judaism, we judge people by their actions — not what we think their thoughts are."

How is that not an apology, exactly? You just doubt his sincerity, so what am I thinking right now, since you apparently hear what is not said aloud. Try reading the Rabbi's quote and see if your change your mind.

Drunks say stupid stuff, Tom who?

Rodeo 07-31-2006 11:49 AM

I say stupid stuff when I'm buzzed too ... just not "Fcuking Jews! Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world." Nor have I ever asked a cop, "Are you a Jew?"

And that's apparently the SANITIZED version.

Sorry, that's not "stupid" in my book. That's an evil mind unleashed by drink.

rouxroux 07-31-2006 11:54 AM

I can see it now: "South Park, the Mel Edition, Vol. II).
When are these jerks going to rise above the "double standard" and actually get "OWNED" instead of saying what & who THEY own?

So you know exactly what he was thinking?

I could see one of my friends saying something like this after hearing an off-color joke (and I'm thinking of my friends from the Deerfield/Highland Park area ;)).

Rodeo 07-31-2006 12:05 PM

I don't think it was meant to be funny.

To each his own. That's not a man that I would want to associate with, drunk or sober.

I really don't think you'll have to worry about that.

Almost as if he were setting you up with the straight line, perhaps Rodeo is funnier than I thought.

I don't think so. He's a simple soul with a lot of anger.

Rodeo 07-31-2006 12:20 PM

I didn't think that exchange was particularly funny either.

Go figure.

Tobra 07-31-2006 12:32 PM

That is because you said something stupid and were made sport of due to your faux pas(That is French for "bonehead play") People don't appreciate being made fun of, well most people anyway

So how is it that is not an apology again? Think about it

Agree.

Rodeo 07-31-2006 12:45 PM

Mel wouldn't want to hang with me ... hahaha.

Unoriginal and unfunny. Mr. Wilson is mostly too nasty for my tastes anyway, but that one was just dull.

Eye of the beholder I guess.

cantdrv55 07-31-2006 01:21 PM

OK maybe I'm just not being sensitive enough here. I guess if I was a Jew I'd be pretty upset at what Mel said...whatever that was. I can't read the cop's notes at all.

I don't know how you got copies of those notes Moses. If they're not available to the public then you've got some scary connections. I'm impressed. Remind me not to piss you off anymore.

MichiganMat 07-31-2006 01:33 PM

Surprise, surprise! Church doesn't cure alcoholism. Welcome to the real world Mel!

The guy has been dry for so long with nothing but faith to sustain him, its a wonder he hasn't killed anyone by now, much less offended someone. I would probably be pissed off at everyone within reach if I were itching for drink all day with thoughts of hellfire and damnation keeping me from doing it. Poor guy, hope he gets some help.

speeder 07-31-2006 01:41 PM

Compared to his father, he's a frikking Hasidic.

BlueSkyJaunte 07-31-2006 02:14 PM

I find it outrageously funny that the typical righties on the board are defending him (because he's a "good Christian", I suppose) while castigating the typical lefties--who are speaking out about his anti-Semitic comments.

Meanwhile, in other threads, the lefties are being castigated as anti-Semitic for not supporting Israel 100%...

nostatic 07-31-2006 02:18 PM

yeah, i'm confused.

how about we just hate him because he's rich and gets lots of tail?

cantdrv55 07-31-2006 02:32 PM

No one here is defending him because he is a good Christian. I couldn't care less what his religion is or isn't. The dude was stoned drunk and was a blabbering idiot. No excuses. He did publicly apologize though even if it wasn't necessary. What he said to the cops shouldn't have been made public. Now we know he is bigoted deep down but couldn't you tell that from his Christ movie?

Besides, who isn't the slightest bit bigoted deep down?

The real question is why are we (on anyone) actually discussing this? Every day across the country people are drunk and arrested and say stupid dumb stuff. Do we ever hear about that? Only when it's someone of (supposed) importance do we hear about it.

This was a private matter between Gibson and the police. This was not a public forum in the town square. The police are the ones that should have gotten an apology. And it appears from the link Nostatic posted, that they got one.

A (female) friend at work has this video game called Hamtaro.

Apparently the point of the game is to collect rocks...which the hamsters take to the Rub-Rub room.

(I'm not making this up.)

Not really a contradiction. Read, for example, the book "Hitler's Pope" about Pius XII.
