Sorry I didn't post yesterday - no internet access. In fact, barely cell reception to call home! Peeled out bright and early from Susanville, dashed thru Reno and met up with a buddy in Fernley for breakfast.
At Fernley, you have a choice for SB traffic. 95 or ALT 95 (for alternative 95). This is a road trip, an adventure - so obviously ALT 95 is the one for me! It later joins 95 so you get to the same place. The smoke in many areas of Nevada is positively awful. The road was fabulous, but the smoke started to irritate my eyes terribly, especially my left eye which teared dramatically. Originally I planned to stop in Tonopah, but the smoke was actually most dense there so onto Beatty. By the time I left Tonopah, I actually had to drive with my left eye covered by my hand. Wish I'd had an eye-patch after all yesterday was "talk like a pirate day"... The good news is that the smoke did begin to clear. By the time I got to Beatty, the air was clear and gorgeous. My eye was also swollen completely shut... Setup the tent and hit the bed early - 400 plus miles in the smoke in the spyder is actually a long day. Tomorrow, I'm going to detour over to Rhyolite, a little ghost town just a few miles out of the way. Saw some interesting things along the way - prostitution is LEGAL in Nevada!!!!

This morning, while in Beatty, I got up around 5am. The sun was still well behind the mountains but there was enough starlight that I could actually see the ground. Decided to go for a little run. There are steep short mountains surrounding Beatty, one of which was right across from my little camp.
So off I go - slowly with the dim light. Just cruising along, slow jog and all of a sudden the boulders start jumping up and RUNNING!!! The light was so dim, all I could make out were vague shapes of large things moving - fortunately AWAY from me! Took a few seconds to realize I had stumbled onto a small herd of wild burros who had been sleeping, minding their own business, in the bottom of the canyon I was running through. Hard to see who was more surprised, they or I, at the unexpected sight of the other. There were seven in the little herd. Next headed to Rhyolite, the little ghost town outside of Beatty. The wind was blowing so hard that probably half of my camera shots were "missed" because a gust would literally knock me aside. Made packing the tent this morning an event worth buying tickets too... Finally just stuffed the dang thing in the trunk.... Angela

Also, these plants strarted showing up south of Tonopah, what are they? Yucca? Second pic is just some of the great road I've been driving. Tell ya what though - if you are going to drive 95, make sure you have a trust-worthy car. You could starve to death before you actually got a tow-truck!! angela

Looking good Angela. Enjoy the scenery .... not much to see anymore... Keep us posted
Check your PM. PS. While prostitution is legal in Nevada, the 'solicitation' is not allowed in Clark County (where Las Vegas is), go figure. PPS. Watch out the gas ... not many places on 95 south of Tonopah

Hmmm, Oregon rain or Nevada Smoke...tough choice. Angela, loved the cottentail ranch pic. I've printed it, going to use it as a letterhead when I next write a snail mail pal. Still thinking about what tale I'll use.

Yep, that would be right about the time they were driectly over the shark in the jump. Loved them in the early 80's when they were raw. I will admit their latest album, the songs I have heard sounds like maybe a return to the old.
