- Sure. But I think the same thing could have happened in Miami -- or maybe even Dallas. I grew up in the South and all the behavior is geared towards impressing other people. Here in Oregon, nobody wants to live on a big street and the houses look pretty crummy on the outside - the insides are always very comfy and well fixed up tho. In Louisiana, every family aspired to live on a boulevard (so all the people going past in cars could see the house) - so they could show off.
- That was after the basic transition to living in a brick house was made -- that meant you'd made it up into the middle class -- a brick house instead of wood, or even tar paper.

So I think it's a regional thing -- and a cultural one. Malibu (the one we stereotype, David) is just the acme for one broader expression.


Yes, there were Indians in all those places. Every spot on this continent has layers of history over and over on top of it. Mamy many different Indian groups, then the Spanish, Russians, French, or British or all of them. The best recent line is from the trailer for the film 'Bobby' - a Hispanic guy says we didn't move over the border, the border moved over us.

I spent a large part of my childhood in Louisiana. In Lafayette, it seemed the boulevard was no one's care, and brick houses were nowhere to be found. All a family aspired to was not have their home flooded, which was why everyone's house looked like it was put on concrete jack stands.

I find it unfortunate that the broader expression is also the most transparent and in the end, least thoughtful. Stereotypes serve no purpose but to display vast endemic ignorance from one society to another. Malibu notwithstanding for thoughts of it being nothing more than Tits and Testarossas, Lake Ponchartrain shouldn't just be known for inhabiting (as I've heard people out here say) inbred Cajuns.

Malibu has its Chumash. Lake Ponchartrain has/had its Chitimacha and Oumas, and probably some Blackfoot and Seminole.

BTW: the quote is: "We didn't cross the border, the border crossed us." I've heard it about 50 times on TV.

Mexico sold the land to the US. The border didn't move over them, they sold the land out from under themselves. Besides, I don't think the guy who said that was there in the late 1860s so the border did not move over him.

Some will question the tactics behind the purchase, but it doesn't matter. Still bought and paid for.

Yeh there are always individuals who have some psychological issues - my point is that different areas can elevate that kind of behavior so that most do it as opposed ot other areas where only a few do it.
-- kinda like that criminology theory that it's partly cultural -- if most of the grownups in your neighborhood are pimps or jack cars, then you are more likely to do so, than if most grownups work at ibm/Armonk or similar

The dyno is the best idea. The math required for the top speed (165 mph) can be done from knowing the engine's power and the car's gearing.

It's a no brainer.

i cant beleive that went up to 37K. It looks pretty beat up in the interior and engine. Nothing special if you ask me. I got my 82sc turbo look for 9k and its much nicer than that. Maby theres somthing im missing here

Drag, lift, downforce, etc. not so easily factored in,especially on a top down Targa.

I agree, a dyno read out would be very valuable for the other claims.

But, hey, I'd love seeing execmalibu at Bonneville talking his talk...
B.S. quickly exposed there...it's most definitely a "prove it" place.

ol' exec hasn't been here that I know of since his convenient out and posting of the trans chart. Calling everyone "pussies" was his way of backing out. I, too, thought quite a bit of money was offered as a wager and the free entry to OTR. I know that the Pelicans that said they would put up, would come thru. But, he doesn't know that, or doesn' want to. Hence, since there was no hand holding, the deal went away.

I'm just glad I didn't go out of my way to attend the big nothing. To tell you the truth, I'm disappointed in Dan. I know he has a big business related responsibility and has to cancel plans now and then. But, when you start something like this, it has to be followed tru, just like in busness. Sending a proxy would have been better than nothing.

However, like Paul says, it's just entertainment, folks. Nothing to get worked up about. I think my permanent answer to "I'm faster than you" is, "Yes you are." You go, man.

I know, EM's ride would look way cooler with a whale tail, turbo flares and a slant nose kit. An updated sc interior would help too, his door pockets look really cheap. What's with these early cars? They look closer to a Type 1 than a Porsche.
