Call it a comfort zone. We all have them, and they are not limited to race, religion or gender.

Hawk:
I am confused by your response. Racism is a form of prejudice. Some prejudices do not show up until certain criteria come together. I do not like being near open windows in high buildings. Am I prejudiced against altitude? Hmmmm....Something to ponder....

It would, I am certain, be a pleasure. In my case, from the time I was a kid, my parent's house was filled with every stripe of humanity imaginable. They were Real Estate Brokers and I grew up thinking of people as individuals rather than stereotypes. Even with that kind of exposure, I cannot say with absolute certainty that, under the proper circumstances, some form of racially/ethnicly based predujice wouldn't raise its ugly head!!
"Never" is an absolute and absolutes are not found in nature.

I have no illusions...I cannot say with absolute certainty that, under the proper circumstances, some form of racially/ethnicly based predujice wouldn't raise its ugly head either. But, in advance of that, I'd bet I would think they were a dick first. Being a dick is universal.

White privilege is real, and it's worldwide. You can go to the blackest country on the blackest continent on earth, and feel the extra consideration you get for being european or white. We are like the Romans of the modern world; a huge minority amongst the peoples of the world and the most privileged by far.
My brother lives in India, before that it was Africa for 15 years. (Angola and then Congo). He travels extensively throughout Asia and Africa including the ME, He told me that whenever he is in a customs line, anywhere in the world, and it is comprised of white europeans he breaths a sigh of relief that he will be through the line in no time. If it is a line filled w/ dark-skinned people from any part of the world, the opposite is true. "It's going to be a while." Does this mean that you are supposed to feel guilty for being white? Hell no! Of course not. But don't be ignorant, either. Live in reality, not some polyanna land where racism doesn't exist and everyone is given the same breaks no matter what their skin looks like. Or where "redneck" holds the same power as the "N" word. ![]() Had an interesting conversation w/ my Dad on my recent visit, he was biatching about hip-hop culture or the loud music that he hears black people playing in their cars, (I don't like to be thumped to death by bass at a traffic light myself, but I digress), I basically got him to admit to some racism in as much as he said that he doesn't like black culture. He doesn't like the clothes, the music, etc., to the point where it bugs him. I'm sure that the same is true of a lot of older white people, and some young ones too. I happen to like black culture for the most part, so I was not with him on this. A lot of racism is really more of a culture clash than actual racial hatred, people despise aspects of another's culture. And every culture has its good and bad, of course. Anywhoo..., just sort of free-associating at this point,*racial discussion exposition*. I think that most of the people here are really exceptional, it's a great community. Everyone has their role, even if it is just to be an example.

The notion of "white privilege" is social "science" claptrap, probably based on Gunnar Myrdal's mythical findings in the late 1940's. It doesn't exist now, and never has.

You'll have to go quite far to prove that which cannot be proved. |
