I'll side with Chris on this one.

I live in Canada and we don't carry guns around and our crime rate is lower than the US's ... so that argument doesn't go far. We don't have metal detectors at school doors because all the kids are armed because guns are so available.

Toronto is having gun violence problems as they are turning more and more into a norther version of a large US city with vast social and economic gaps creating too many gangs.

I think if you look at stats about having guns in the home, the guns are used more for killing the spouse during a domestic argument than for self protection from a burgler.

How about the kids who find the gun under dad's bed and accidentally shoot one another .. that seems to happen quite often.

Guys: My choice is a stainless steel Colt M1991A1, the updated new version of the 1911. It's a great handgun, soon to be in widespread military use, notably the USMC. This new version, whether Colt, Springfrield Armory, etc., is the best of its kind in the world. JonyRR can tell you that I know whereof I speak.

Toronto area criminals don't obay gun laws? There is a lot of factors that develope crime statistics. In Africa, the machete is the prefered weapon of crime and has killed a hell of alot more. I have a LAR grizzly 45 mag semi auto. The brass is expensive, but I get about ten reloads out of them.

Dan no matter what side someone stands on the gun argument the buck stops even for any NRA propaganda if you look at the big city just separated by a river called Windsor/Ont on the north and Detroit/Mich on the south side.I think Windsor has a much murders in one year as Detroit in one day...End of the "gun" argument...
There was also a funny movie (Bowling for Columbine) where a fat guy from michigan with the name michael walked through windsor and people were friendly and left their doors unlocked.On the south side americans were scared and afraid of who knows what carrying guns that kept them "safe" as they try to keep us scared with the "terrorists" to pry our last rights and freedoms away to have big brother protect us and keep us safe...
I guess it must be some kind of american paranoia and hence the fascination with guns...An argument which might cost you a bloody nose in canada might leave someone dead in the US;as the name implies saturday night special...
But to be fair todays gunlaws in the US are as restrictive as in europe except for a few states remaining were you actually can carry a gun except for keeping one in your house or go hunting,target shooting...And with 150 miilion firearms + in the country it would be too late anyways to do anything about it...The poor and economically challenged will always have access to one as also the law abiding taxpayers who feel scared without them...

only if you believe the official BS statistics.
The REAL numbers show HUGE increases in violent crime wherever personal firearms ownership is banned.
The UK, Austrailia....HUGE increases. And of course, the politicos WON'T tell the truth about this, as it would show how specious thier misdirected social experiment really is.
Scotland has the HIGHEST incident of personal crime against people in the western hemisphere...followed closely by the UK and our brothers down-under.

and Geuting, last time I looked, your homeland started it's late slide into horror in the 30's by instituting total firearms confiscation of the general populace. Things might have turned out differently if the citizenry retained thier right to checkmate an out-of-control government by any means necessary...and before you go spouting off your regular socalist BS, I feel the same way about the here-and-now. The ultimate checkmate on a corrupt government's power is an armed, informed citizenry.
And an honest question..if you're so dissatisfied with wheere you are, why DON'T you go back to the vaterland where it's utiopa...because this place IS still better than where you're from.
My offer still stands to take up a collection for you for a one-way ticket back to the homeland

I'm a Sig fan, myself, but the unfortunate truth is quite a few homeowners end up shot with their own handguns. They don't seem to understand that a handgun is absolutely the last resort - useful only after every other option has been exhausted, and never, ever point a gun at someone unless you fully intend to shoot them. As for the "free" medical, etc. - along with it comes with 25 or 30% (or more) value added taxes, $8US per gallon petrol, etc. Most of my friends in countries with socialized medicine complain bitterly about long waits, antiquated equipment, poor choices of doctors and treatments, etc. They then buy their own supplemental health insurance on top of what they're already giving their governments huge portions of their salaries for. Personally, I'm quite happy buying my own from the beginning and paying significantly less taxes than I would in any of the dozen or so countries I've worked in over the past 20 years.

What those countries do have over the US is better motorcycles.

Congrats on the new toy! I just picked up a S&W 340PD as a Birthday present to myself last weekend. Thing is so light its scary to think what it will shoot like when I get a chance to go to the range next week. It weighs in a 12.5 oz and is rated for .357, but I plan on loading .38spl+
Also have a S&W 640, 66 and a Glock 27 which is my favorite to shoot and I'm most accurate with, particularly with rapid groupings, hehe.

Things have changed since the old days. Back then (late 60s all into the late 70s) it seemed the motorcycle gun of choice was more of the smaller, easy to hide, type. I bought a matched set of Smith and Wesson Model 61 nickle with pearl handles that came in their factory zip up cases. Thinking back then was that they would never be used if possible and then if needed..........whatever the problem would be within 15 feet or much closer. 7 shot, 22 mag hollow points. Percision made on machine, small enough to fit in your hand or carry in the inside of ones jacket. Ya'll are into big boy stuff now...........

Well, you need a hot round to penetrate multiple layers of clothing in cold weather. My SIG P229 in .357SIG is perfect for that. In the summer I swap in the .40 cal. barrel.

I still have on just like that DC, and I still have it stashed in my riding gear...it fits very neatly in my riding pants, right behind the knee protector, in a special pocket holster my wife made.

Wow, nothing personal but you guys really are different south of the border. Didn't one ot your persidents cal us up here a 'kinder, gentler society'? Maybe we're a bunch of pansies?

Walking or riding around armed all the time must give one a totally different mindset. I find it hard to imagine. Do you think it makes people more aggressive .. more macho? You know that if anyone pisses you off you can always let him have it ... and the other guy knows that too so he has to be even quicker on the draw. Do you think things escalate out of control quicker that way?

If anything, being armed makes one LESS macho and aggressive, as they have a much larger responsibility to avoid trouble than does the unarmed general public. I know I behave a lot more responsibly (no drinking for sure) when I'm carrying.
