Actually he also owned some plain Jane domestic as a DD for a long time... an Oldsmobile I think.

Reminds me of the story he did about "Salt Cars"; sacrificial winter beaters. He was complaining that you couldn't get cheap, but quirky & interesting winter cars anymore, like Fiats, Renaults etc...

"Dino, car of the North" was killer.

Wasn't "40 Mission car" about his Cadillac? Leaving a train of auto tranny fluid?

He did a great road trip in the caddy, tracing the history of the blues as he drove south along the Mississippi.

Yeah, I think it was about his Cadillac in the beginning, but later turned to the 356 too. Said something like his 356 would never, EVER see salt as long as it was in his hands, and then ended like a poem to everything good and solid and warm and ancient....

I'm such a Peter Egan fan, I rode past his house south of Madison, WI the last time I passed that way on a M/C trip. I just wanted to see what his little world was like. Nice older house in the country on several acres. Enough trees to keep prying eyes at bay. Large detached garage/barn.

It gives me a good "visual" of his shop while reading his articles.....

Yes it certainly sounds like an idyllic spot. I would love to meet him some day, sounds like a really interesting guy.

He would probably fit right in here... didn't he restore a Piper Cub too?

I love Peter Egan's stuff. I LOL when I get the new R&T. I generally read Side Glances first. I think I'm eventually going to get the Side Glances books.

Actually, it was his time behind the wheel of a miata and his articles about it that is a major factor behind me owning one now.

LOL, just read the Nov "side Glances" Online:

The things we do for cars:
http://www.roadandtrack.com/article.asp?section_id=26&article_id=3999

"Wasn't this too old to be trespassing at a dump, climbing over a fence and digging through a dumpster for old car parts? Was there a cutoff date? If so, what was it? hard to tell, but I instinctively sensed it had passed. Also, my back was getting sore.

So I carefully climbed out and began flinging all that old sheet metal back into the bin. I finished the job, climbed over the fence and walked back to my van. I started the engine, cranked the heat up and sat there for a while, warming up. I looked at my watch. It was 6:35 a.m.

At about 6:40 I said to myself, "Well, what else have I got to do on a cold rainy morning before breakfast?"

I turned the van off, climbed over the fence and walked back to the dumpster and spent the next half hour unloading it. again. "

Classic!

I dropped my subscription to R&T after 32 years.....too much fluff, too many articles similar to C&D (which I have also dropped). I just can't get over testing trucks and SUV's in a sports car magazine.

Egan is the only thing I miss...but the price of subscription isn't worth a minute a month of good reading.

Dennis

PS the R&T guys never made a comment, plea or follow on request to get me back...I guess their subscription software has no logic for long term loyalty.

I used some Delta frequent flier miles to get a free subscription. I think it cost a few hundred miles for a one year subscription.

For what its worth, I think the best sports car magazine out there at the moment is Octane. Classic and contemporary. Great writing. Impeccable research on the historical stuff.

Grassroots Motorsports. I got three free years for giving them some of my old parts for their latest 911 project. It's a great magazine for gearheads, particularly on a budget.

I've been doing more online reading and forum trolling concerning new cars. R&D, C&D, Automobile are all very good, but when it comes to the internet, free is free.

Here is an interesting alternative to magazines piling up in the family room.

Now that's something I'd do. After reading everything he's written about both cars and motorcycles, I feel like I know him.

In fact, I'd rather sit back and have a cup with him in his shop, then see any celeb's house here in Hollyweird.
