"Spam was one of the few meats excluded from the British food rationing that began in World War II and continued for a number of years after the war, and the British grew heartily tired of it, hence the sketch."

"Spam is mentioned in the Camelot scene of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, where the Knights of the Round Table sing that they "eat ham and jam and Spam a lot". Spam-a-lot also became the name of the Monty Python musical based on the film, to both reference the "Spam a lot" lyric in the original film and Monty Python's SPAM affiliation."

Oh really?

Frustrated, downtrodden & oppressive?

I'm there a lot and must have missed that.

And overtaxed? Well all tax is too much tax but the UK is actually a tax haven of sorts - that's why everyone wants to move to London. No tax at all on income that doesn't have a UK source.

A land of pristine lakes and oceans, verdant meadows and picturesque mountains. A bountiful land where the women are as plentiful as they are compliant. A land where political discourse is guided by reason and social issues addressed with compassion. A land without class distinctions or castes - where each and everyone can be the best that they can be in a thriving economy full of equal opportunities. A land that welcomes all equally and does not punish its criminals, but instead picks them up and helps them along on the bumpy road of life. A land as rich in culture as it is in ethnic diversity. A land where Porsches are as common as Camrys in your fine land.

That, my friend, is Lotus Land.

Russia would have seen off the Germans on there own eventually. I think the debt has been repaid with Korea, 2 Gulf Wars and the halting of Communism .

Bob, missed this one last night.

I served in the British Army.
So I am not part of the thankless generation who knows dick.

You're still young and just because you served in the army (probably as errand boys for our army) doesn't mean you know dick. Rather, you know what you've been fed by people who were there and served under us, thus having an inferiority complex.

And now my oldest wants to join up when he is older!

Tell him to wait until we have a new president. He doesn't want to work for Bush.

Worse thing ever was when we let you lot have your independence. One of my relatives was probably serving then as well

Let us?? We grabbed it by the balls baby! Yee-haw! I know some of my relatives were there kickin your relatives pasty a$$es back into the Atlantic!

I hope you know I'm just messin' with ya......mostly.

Spot on.
Thats why I emigrated to Canada. No way would I have done as well in the U.K.
Wrong School & wrong regional accent.
The accent is one reason some Brits have problems with "Yanks", because in the U.K. the second you speak you are instantly classified into your "Class". However, A Brit only knows an American accent as an American accent, they can't classify the speakers social standing.
Therefore they are immediately on the offensive.
Of course the American class system is all about money, not breeding, so in the eyes of the Brit upper class even the richest American is still only "Trade".
Saying you can trace your ancestors back to the Mayflower will only make them laugh. They have pets that can trace their line back before that!
Breeding is everything....just look at Prince Charles....although the Royal Familly is actually German/Greek, Victoria's first language was German, she spoke English with a German accent (German Nanny & Governess).

Dottorre and Craig911...

You're corner of the world is wonderful (on both sides of the border). A few years back, my (then) gf and I drove her old Isuzu Tropper from yeah-hello-Mississippi to Bellingham, on up into Canada, then back to catch the ferry. Went all the way up the inside passage. Off loaded and drove the AlCan Hwy on over to Denali. Then down around the Kenai Peninsula and finally over to Anchorage.

In Anchorage we sold the Trooper for $3000 and flew home (it was 12 years old w/290,000 miles on the clock but it was a 4wd, fully operational and no rust). Most we could get for it down heah was 1500!(maybe those good ol' boys aren't so dumb after all..lol).

Anyways...we found everyone we encountered as friendly and welcoming, if not a bit bemused by our accents and sense of adventure. 'Course we didn't espouse our political views, disdain for local culture or sexual proclivities on the body work of the Trooper.

Sorry to go off thread.

In Britain the accent business really is insiduous.

I have a couple of very good friends in London - one whom has a very posh accent but comes from modest means (his father was a schoolmaster) and is himself poor as a churchmouse; the other has a thick east-end accent, works in the City and is richer than God.

Now the poor guy has access to every level of society and moves in that society with incredible ease. The rich guy, has no access at all to that society, even though he dresses expensively, is well educated etc. None. Nada. Just can't get in the door.

As you say, breeding is everything.

That said, there is of course today a very large percentage of the population in the UK that absolutely does not give a stuff about these class distinctions. So if you just ignore the ones that do care about them - you can live quite nicely there, thank you very much.

Bob, I'm going to have to eat humble pie here. Been investigating them rednecks and it looks like we originally exported them from my home country...........

'Rednecks are largely descendants of the Ulster-Scots and Lowland Scots immigrants who travelled to North America from Northern Ireland and Scotland in the late 17th and 18th centuries, although some of them are descended from people of Germanic and other stock. The Ulster-Scots had historically settled the major part of Ulster province in northern Ireland, after previous migration from the Scottish Lowlands and Border Country. These pioneering people and their descendants are known in North America as the Scots-Irish. The 18th century influx of Highland Scots into the Carolinas also contributed to the blood'

Which makes me kind of related in some way.

And I always thought the bit that ran down my Mammys leg was thrown just away
