Sweet deal on a Craftsman tool chest combo

I've been playing with the idea of buying one of those nice stainless tool chests at Sams club but $680 is a touch pricey for me. So i keep going back to sears.com and checking prices on various combos and last night i found what i think was a very nice deal.

Total list price for the combo parts i bought was around $560. Sale price was about $429. I did the buy online and pick up at the store deal which got me big time additional discounts and ended up paying $268!!!!

It's not ball bearing but for the difference in price i can buy an awful lot of nice tools! Base cabinet is 5 drawers, middle cabinet is 3 and top cabinet is 8 drawers.

WOW! Good job! I have an old Craftsman benchtop tool box my dad gave me that has to be 30 years old and still looks/works great. No ball bearing drawers but with a little care (i.e. don't overload or overpack drawers ) and it works just fine.

I think I'll go out today and clean/lube the sliders.

Got that set last at years sale. Works great and pretty easy to roll around. Need some rubber tray padding for a final touch now.

Yup, i am quite pleased for $268.

I looked at the liners Sears sells but thought they were a bit pricey. Ended up buying a 5'x2' yoga mat that was similar for $14 instead. Probably won't be enough for the entire thing though.

I am looking now for some organizers for my wrenches. I'm not a big fan of having to sort through 4+ sets of wrenches to find a particular size. Again the Sears trays were ridiculously priced for what they are.

I bought a simiar set-up a few years back. 26" wide, three chests stacked. I went with the ball bearing griplatch, but yours should work well. I am glad I'm 6' plus though. I was showing the set to a 5'8" friend, and he couldn't look down into the top screwdriver drawer. I agree, Sears wants $$$ for the liner material and the wrench organizers. Gotta be a less expensive way to go. Maybe Harbor Freight? I didn't check there.

Congrats on going with the Sears units. One reason I like 'em is "made in the USA"...not China.

That top lid is pretty high. I am thinking i will put less used stuff up there. Can't wait to go home and load it up!

Mine is 5 drawers in the bottom chest, 4 in the middle chest, 5 in the top chest. I just measured..all closed up, from the concrete floor to the top of the closed top chest lid is 67"...5'7". I'm pretty tall, but now wondering if a wider two chest combo may have been better. All depends on your eye level, I guess. Besides, a small step stool is cheap, right? You're gonna love it...it's such a joy to open a drawer and see the tool you're looking for. Before I bought the rollaway, I was rummaging through piled up tools in a series of smaller chests.

I hear ya. I have been accumulating tools at a somewhat decent clip and my main box was the plastic 4 drawer doodad that comes with the craftsman tool set i bought a couple years ago. Just opening the plastic drawers caused the sockets to jump and end up all over the place. I ended up leaving wrenches and sockets out all the time and was starting to lose stuff.

As I said, you're gonna LOVE it! My main suggestion would be to do the drawer liner thing before you begin organizing to your taste. Hell, even old inner tube rubber would make good liner material, if you could flatten it out. The purpose of it is to keep tools from sliding around when you roll the chest. {Perhaps a "craft" store would have something worth using for liner material? But to slide open a drawer, then SEE what you want? You're gonna LOVE it!!! Just try to remember this in the future. Don't take it for granted...your money was well spent. Be proud of that.

For drawer liners I just go to Lowes or Home Depot and buy the carpet pad that is used under throw rugs and hall rugs to keep them from slipping. Kind of a rubbery weave material. Cheap and works well. Just cut to fit.
