I let me brother drive at an autocross. Sure is cool to see your own car driven in anger and speed (AX speed.)

He only killed a few cones!

Pictures four your enjoyment!

I don't mind if others drive my car. As long as they know how to drive and have a decent head on their shoulders, why not share in the joy of driving a Porsche? Heck, I let my mother-in-law take it out (her first time) last week in the rain (with me riding shotgun, of course). Not that I wasn't a little bit nervous. But in the end, it's just a car. (I'm a HUGE car-guy, so that last statement isn't said flippantly.) As long as the test-driver isn't testosterone-addled or ham-fisted enough to think they're the next Hurley Haywood, they're unlikely to destroy it.

Riding my motorcycle is a different story. Much higher chance for a newbie or unfamiliar person to leave the shiny side down.

Noah I am glad to know U are a discerning indivdual, that can tell the difference between a person with his head on his shoulders and one with his head up his a$$.

Tyson busted onto our Autocross scene like Hans Stuck. Our AX community is one of the fastest in the nation. Tyson did VERY well. Half way through the season he decided that California girls were cuter (or at least, sluttier) than Washington girls.

One of the funniest things Tyson said to me was "I was driving along Thunderhill recently and it occurred to me that in street driving it's just not normally necessary to look our your passenger side window to see where you're going."

Tyson's talent is, as you say, incomprehensible to most of us. I'm guessing that Jack and Tyson have a mutual admiration.

Well if you keep on repeating the same old thing long enough someone might actually think U have something poignant to say.

Its a car for God's sake, why not?

There is a guy in our area who treats his car like a baby and I just cannot understand it. Its a car, not a baby or something breakable. I started to sit on his fender, as many of us have done for years and OMG he came apart.

Guys, if the person who wants to drive the car is capable then why not?

Fairly simple, really. If it's my idea and I offer, or if it's for a DE where I understand that an instructor knows what they are doing and are there to improve my driving.

My wife has a key and can drive it any time she wants. She also auto-x and hillclimbs the car. My brother gets the same privileges. I have offered a drive to several friends, but I can't think of any of my friends who would be discourteous enough to blatantly ask for my car. Way too forward, imo. That's too much attitude and deserves a loud "NO" if only on principle.

Not to turn this into a Tyson diefication thread, but that's the thing. I'm not sure it matters what he drives. Ask Jack, as he has more experience at tracks with Tyson than I, but my strong sense is that if it has wheels and an engine, Tyson can make it dance.

Joe is right. Not about politics, but about cars. I very much like the idea that lots of guys think Porsches are fine jewelry to be garaged constantly, driven only on rare occasions and never in the rain. I like that idea because that means there is always a fresh source of unmolested Porsches. I hope the person who is garaging my future 997TT today is warming her up every few weeks or so and changing fluids often.

To me, a car is a car. Sure, they make nice art, but as cool as they look, the coolest thing about them is that they move. They are machines. The real art is under the surface.

It's just not a good idea to share your Porsche because it is very different to drive than other cars. No matter how experenced or good of a driver the guest is, uness he has driven you car before you don't know that he can handle your particular 901/915/G-50 or your car's unique body thrust as it goes around corners. And since someone has to drive your car once for you to know that he has the ability to drive it, the only person you can trust to safely let drive you car is a previous owner.

If you let someone drive your car the best thing that can happen is nothing bad comes of it. The worst thing that can happen is a broken car, big repair bills and hard feelings.

The worst that can happen if you don't let anyone drive your car is nothing bad happens. The best that can happen if you don't let anyone else drive your car is that your car is safe to enjoy for years to come.

Much like Nancy Reagan, I urge you to just say no.

I normally only offer to car people and then if they have offered me a drive in their car. Express some interest intheir car, see if they are a car person and then let you drive theirs. Experince about the missed shift above is bad. If I damaged someone car on a drive I would fund the repairs or at least part of it if on the way out.

I was in a real pinch, doing yard work, i needed a Pickup truck badly. He is a good guy, on the level, non-bible spankin christian. So he has somewhere to go (probably a church meeting), i just toss him the keys. I really needed his truck.

I guess what it boils down to, is: my 911 is just a car (fablous, awesome holy-grail of automobiles in my garage, but just a car) Some day, it will no longer be road worthy or will be destoryed in an accident. When it goes, i will find a way to get another one.
