Pickup Nomenclature

What exactly do the terms "half ton", "three-quarter ton", and "one ton" refer to?

They correspond to neither payload or towing capacity of the respective vehicles.

The terms used to refer to carrying capacity.

With Dodge, a D-100 (half ton) allegedly could carry 1000lbs in the bed. The D-150 was the same truck with premium options. (like a headliner instead of a bare roof, and chrome side trim)

How many thousand, hundreds and tens of pounds of carrying capacity left over when (most) owners of aformentioned trucks buy one 2 X 4 at Home Depot...

Around here, most people have 4x4 pickup trucks for one reason: deer hunting.

I carried 2000 lbs. of flooring in my F150 (which was a little over its payload). The whole reason that I bought a pickup truck was that I discovered that I was renting the store truck at $20 for an hour at least once a month. I still need to go buy more bricks and mulch...

Deer hunting, elk hunting, bear hunting, cougar hunting, etc. Plus
firewood hauling, hay hauling, brick and lumber hauling, trash hauling, brush hauling, gravel hauling, etc.

I can survive quite well without a Porsche...life without a pickemup would be miserable!

Pick-ups, Pools and Boats - nice to have but better if a good friend has one as well. A case of beer and a few cigars are still cheaper than a truck payment, boat payment or a pool payment. All my friends with trucks look for excuses to use the truck "Mike, you still thinking about renting a jack hammer to tear up your drive way and put in pavers? Lets take my truck! Lemme know...
Mike, you want to line your crawl space with plywood? Lowes is having a sale, lets take my truck!
Mike I got a few logs to take to the land fill, you want to load er up with anythingand go to the dump with me? Lets take my truck!"
Any excuse to use the truck and do guy stuff...

Boats and pools are no different. All our freinds would much rather use their pools and boats with someone else as guests than alone. Plus, we are always good for beer and food!

It's the weight of dollar bills - in pounds - that it'll take to fill the gas tank.

I hauled one cubic yard of wet sand once in a '73 Datsun pickup. The rear leaf springs were pinched against the vehicle's frame. The front tires were skipping on the ground. It was a dumb thing to do but I got away with it. I guess this means that truck was at least a one-ton. At least.

If I could only have one vehicle, it would be my pickup.

Back in my younger (and dumber) days, I loaded 45 cases of milk into my 4x4 Ranger (1800+ lbs) and drove about 60 miles with the load. I was NOT speeding, believe me!
The reserve capacity built into most trucks' load ratings protects most of us from ourselves.

Haul careful, eh!

Are you kidding? Everyone I know with a truck dreads that all their friends want to borrow it at the drop of a hat. And like some of the posts here, they would probably overload the hell out of it if they were allowed to borrow it.

I do NOT loan mine out, period. I will help a friend move, pick up something, etc, but in general, I think many people treat a borrowed car/truck like a rental car....no thanks.

Last time I let someone borrow my truck, she put a $700 dent in the side. No one, especially my wife, will be borrowing my truck.

Yesterday my truck had three sets of wheels & tires, jack, ramps, tools, shade tent, chairs, gas cans and a few miscelanious items while towing the race car.

Yup. A truck is a good thing to have.

I've always had a truck and my attitude is that it's just a truck. Pretty much anyone can borrow it. I think I would feel goofier being hung up on the appearance of my truck than I do with the various nicks, scratches, dents and dings.......it's just a truck.

You wouldn't mind driving around a brand new truck with a 4 foot gouge down the side?

I didn't mean that to single you out. Yes I would certainly be upset for the short term. On a new truck I would get it fixed.

Very few cars left that you can buy that have a body-on-frame and RWD. Even a lot of the so called SUVs or crossovers don't have the body/frame arrangement. Frankly, I think having a frame makes a stout vehicle. So, if I didn't need a truck (which I do), I'd probably own one anyway.

I always thought 1/2T, 3/4T and 1T were what payload the truck could carry comfortably and still stop in a reasonable distance. Unloaded, a PU is not the best ride, but they are getting better. The worst one I ever had was an '81 454 crew cab dually. 8 MPG coming or going, loaded or not. Once, with a 2 foot high stack of drywall in the back, it rode like a Cadillac. Most of the time it bounced so much you couldn't talk. Well, that's our CA freeways for ya. On the open road, it wasn't too bad except for the mileage.

Man, at $3 something a gallon, it would cost a grand a month to feed that beast.

Bravo! Besides, in my neighborhood? Nobody asks or needs to borrow a pickumup...there's one in every driveway...

Around here, people only ask if you can pick something up with them. It's almost an insult to ask to borrow someone's truck--it's like asking to borrow their wife.

Sunday I used my truck for the reason it was purchased. We loaded my wifes RX into the car hauler and spent the day zoom-zooming at an SCCA-AX.
