Fred Thompson - the next Ronald Reagan?

I see some similarities. Of course RR also became president. He could be the dark horse in this herd of pale riders.

Let's get our next Prez either from American Idol or Dancing With the Stars. Or maybe the winners from those two shows can face off in the general election.

Garage
I've heard a few clips of him speaking and he has the same "folksy" way of speaking that Reagan did.

Actually, he has political background... check him out before assuming "he is just an actor"

Yep. It's just that I have a hard time understanding why the (Repub) voters are so enamored with actors. Is it nostalgia? Is it putting on a cowboy or tough guy or action hero image? Not that they can't do the job as ineffectively as anyone else. And I certainly favor electing an actor over a career pol.

Fred Thompson is no Ronald Reagan. Reagan was an ideologue (right or wrong) that was passionate about politics. Thompson doesn't appear to be anything other than 'charming' or have much of a track record of success as a Senator.

The 'lazy' stigma is starting to stick (not that I think that's a bad thing... government doing less is good in my book), but its his 'record' that i suspect will turn people off eventually.

He comes from the dirtiest part of the government... he was a lobbyist from 1975 to 1992 and was waaaaay deep on the thieving side of the S&L bailout.

He has however, banged a lot of hot broads.

Probably has more real-world legislative experience there than from his time in the Senate.

I think Republican candidates generally lack charisma and the ability to really communicate. We've always felt that our message sells great if you can get people to actually listen. Reagan did just that (because he was a performer?) and Thompson seems to have that same quality (because he's a performer?).

I don't think we give a damn that they're from Hollywood, it's the ability to communicate that comes with it that appeals.

Have you seen Ron Paul in any of the debates?

That guy is a black hole of charisma. He needs to have a charistmatic person standing next to him to suck away some of that guy's charm in order to get himself to zero.

And when he speaks, he makes GWB look like a statesman, or at least the president of Toastmasters, by comparison.

Totally unelectable.
