I have been watching the Rot set in since 1980. They were talking about saving SS then and they are talking about it now. In the mid 80s I picked up the "12 Caesars" by Suestonious and OMG....If U were to ask a comparison I would say pre Sulla...the place where the Repblic is just getting shakey and dysfunctional.
This Immigration Bill was really BAD...because it appeared that both sides were bought off. America was founded upon the principle of RULE OF LAW. With the giving amnesty and eventual Citizensihip for ILLEGAL actions that concept has been thrown out the window. This is the 2nd nail in the coffin. The 1st nail was the challenge Gore made to the outcome of the election in 2000. For 200 years EVERYBODY knew that the process of counting the votes was flawed, yet nobody complained. Now that the outcome isn't liked , Gore challenged the very process of counting the votes AFTER the fact. This was the 1st time anybody had challeged the very Process of voting itself. Now we can't even trust our own Election Process...

...the system rewards the slippery ones with silver tongues and backroom deals, and *****s on smart problem solvers that give a crap. "Nostatus"
And this is why the American Repblic is in trouble...the situational ethics crowd..win at any cost.....has its hands on the reigns of power.

Situational ethics...Interesting concept.
Why don't others recognize this in some of our leadership? Evidence that absolute power corrupts absolutely?

America is not lost...some Americans may be drifting, but the center will hold.
The idea of America, the desire by all thinking people to seek the principles which founded this country are too compelling. Are there problems in the Republic? Yes. Sounding the clarion is premature.

tabs is interesting, vacillating between despair and optomism.
Bi polar, tabs? Seahawk and I agree. What is going on right now is a snapshot, not the entire newsreel.

Bill and Hillary ARE TOTALLY Situational Ethics accolytes. Bill was a dedicated follower of the Polls.
It seems that all these rats (Pelosis, Boxer Schummer, Hillary, Obama, Edwards, Feinstein etc) are scrambling up the hill of power to see which one can lay claim to being King Rat. Just wait till 09 when a Democrat gets in, U all will be wishing for a return of Darth Cheney Vader...at least with him you knew U were being fked. He told U so...

Darth Cheney.....Yes, I agree that you knew what you were getting. However, as George Carlin pointed out about Bill Clinton, people recognized that he was saying: "Hi! I'm Bill Clinton and I'm full of $hit. Whaddya think of that?" And the people elected him because at least he was honest about being full of $hit. Perhaps better than what we have now.

Even the most well meaning Politiican goes to Washington and sees all these people who think they are smart by being slick. Sooner or later they begin to think why am I being a chump and not getting mine too.
And that my friends is why the Repblic is in trouble. Optimism....I am no Crusader Kat, but when in a Snake Pit one would be afool not to be as wise as a Serpent and meek as a Lamb. So I'm just wising up the Chumps as it were.

That will happen when you start trying to understand someone who is FOS when they say they are FOS. Kinda like the episode of the original Star Trek when Spock drove the computer nuts by making two conflicting statements. "Since I am a Vulcan, I am incapable of lying" followed by "That statement is a lie."

Tabs,
I owe you an apology. I am relatively new to this site (how did I get upgraded to Senior Member in a year???) and my original 'quick' reading (and hasty reply) to your post was made with the thought that you did not live here. In further browsing other threads and from your comments, I see you are possibly in Nevada? My reply was more in reaction to those (non Americans) that continuously complain about how terrible the USA has become and tend to throw stones, while living within their own glass house's abroad. Sorry. ![]() I agree with many of the statements made here and for those that have not read: Slouching Towards Gomorrah by Robert Bork ...I highly recommend it.

If Bush were such a Poll Meister he would have abandon Iraq a long while ago. GW basicallydoes what he believes is right, what he feels is right may not be everyones definition of the term.
The Clintons don't even define things in terms of Right or Wrong just various shades of Gray with the lightest shade being the easiest road to travel down. The Clintons at the end of the day are jsut so ORDINARY. No Great vision no great thinking. A Hillary Presidency would be just like the Bill Presidency...nothing would happen or get done. She would use Executive Orders to excercise power.

Hillary is PATHOLOGICALLY AFRAID to take a stand on any issue. Hillary is a dedicated follower of Fashion like Bill. She seems to think she is so smart by being so slick. What U really end up with at the end of the day with her is mediocracy.
Just take a look at her flip flopping on her vote on the war.
