If you are playing poker and the guy opposite you figures out your "tell" then that's part of the game.

But if he has someone standing behind you reading your cards? Well I think you'd have an issue with that.

Srteroids? Oh yeah, that's a good comparison.

One is observation and anticipation of the opponent's moves, the other is an illegal drug that has been proven to cause severe health risks, injury or premature death and has been shown to promote violent psychotic episodes.

Apples to apples

Oh yes, heard something today that they are also looking into the radio comms. Seems the Pats may have been using more frequencies than allowed by the league. They are trying to determine if they tapped into the offensive play calling as well.

Try this, one is against the rules and, SO IS THE OTHER ONE! They didn't say he was a big old meanie. They said he violated the rules. I hope that helps.

Why do you suppose that every single coach in the league (that isn't working for the jets) covers his mouth when he sends in a play?

In baseball, reading the coaches signals has been part of the game as long as I can remember. That's why the coaches give so many complicated signals, so the other team can't read them. They also change the signals during the course of the game.

PPS I'm not a fan. Fan is short for fanatic and I'd be ashamed to be fanatical about a silly sports team.
Exactly, I see this as a non event...

Some funny stuff was being thrown around on ESPN radio this AM (in addition to lots of unwarranted vitrol and obvious "hater" talk). They were soliciting listener input on how best to levy punishment against NE if the charges prove true. Best suggestions I heard:

1. Bill Bellichick will be required to attend every game for the remainder of the season in a suit & tie.

2. The entire coaching staff has to watch an entire Major League Soccer game.

3. Patriots logo to be re-drawn with a pair of binoculars.

Any other good ones from this crew?

Really? You think every team in the NFL sends people over to the other side of the field with a videocamera to tape the other teams conferences and signals?

If they do, they are breaking an express rule:

"Former Jets quarterback Boomer Esiason said the NFL circulated a memo last September warning of severe penalties for videotaping other teams' signals."

Of course you can look across the field and try to see signals being given, in football or baseball. That's fair, part of the game, and most important, not against the rules. But what they were doing was different, and was expressly against the rules.

do you honestly believe the Patriots need to do that to beat the Jets??? that's laughable.

The Patriots look amazing on paper, that's why everyone is attacking them. It's always the thing to do: attack the most popular kid in school.

Apparently Belicheck thinks so!

ok, now use your brain. think before you type... the players and coaches put in 15 hour days prior to a game, watching tapes, training, etc, etc... their preparation time and effort is outstanding.
do you think they would jeopardize all that by cheating, having a kid videotape the opponents on a couple of plays HOPING to get an edge on just a couple of plays? Doesn't make any sense.

I think the truth here, is that this intern, or whatever, was just videotaping the game and he screwed up big time, and violated the rules. anyone who thinks this was a ploy by the organization to win games is smoking crack. The Pats don't need to cheat. they are already an excellent team.

A team that WOULD need to cheat is a team that stinks, like the Raiders.

that's why I call BS on the whole ordeal.

No, more like Bellichick was doing his homework and what he believed (correctly or not) was an accepted part of the game.

Think about it - if you're an offensive coordinator or a head coach and you've got 10 people shouting in your ear on every play about what they think the opposition is going to do, how much stake do you really put on the guy squinting through a camera lens saying "I think he's calling for a blitz" or whatever?

Ultimately this probably has very little to do with the outcome of plays. It helps certainly, but it's not the "silver bullet" everyone thinks it might be. Hell, even if they stole the other team's play book in its entirety, there's no guarantee of winning (teams can improvise, change plays on the fly, etc.)

I really like the Pats, and Belichick ( tough titty for you who like your coaches warm and fuzzy ) but I have to say this whole thing is sordid and disapointing.
I don't care if any other teams do it (though I'm sure many must or the memo would not have been circulated) I don't want any team I like to have to stoop to that sort of crap.
Line up and kick as. Play football.
Haven't heard what Kraft has to say about it yet. Hoping he kicks some Patriot butt.

Nice photo. Pretty obvious that they guy isn't worried about the game being played. There is a lot of parity in football and sometimes the little edge you get can make all the difference. I was actually hoping that is wasn't true, but I guess its out now. And those that say that its rampant in the NFL might have a point. New England has had many assistant coaches move on. Whats funny is that his previous assistant coach turned him in. I wonder how many actually participated in the crap. Must of been Belichick and just a few others. If the whole team was in on it, those moving on would of surely broke the story.

Hey hey hey, no kicking fans while they are down. Besides if we did cheat i'd hope we'd have done better than 2-14.

I haven't seen enough information yet to draw any conclusions. Predictably, the media has rushed to judgement--some guy with a videocam on the sideline is apparently responsible for 3 super bowls. Taking video of what everybody else on the field and in the stands can see. Spying? Cheating? I don't know enough about it. But I can't believe the Patriots are the only team that does this kind of thing. We'll see. I'm sure there is a lot more to this than meets the eye.
