I had forgotten about Giovanni Jones. Was it he who did the Barber of Seville thing?

THis has been around for some time. The guy won the competition. Maybe now he won't have to sell phones for a living.

Good to know there are some cultured afficionados among us. I'd guess most of these thugs have never understood the towering talent of Giovanni Jones.

I didn't think singing like that was possible without extensive, expensive voice lessons.

Actually Paul Potts did have some "expensive" singing lessons in
Italy a few years ago... he had won some previous competition and
spent the few grand $ on singing lessons....its on his Wikipedia page.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Potts

What singing lessons will do, is help a person improve their range and control of the voice,
which in turn will allow them to make the most of their natural tone. For opera, a certain
amount of operatic technique must be studied specifically.

I feel happy for the guy, he is 37 and not exactly flattering to look at...

His singing tone is rather unique for opera... and that is a good thing.

Over in GB, they dont have the age limit that the US Show has....
you have to be like 28 or under to on American Idol...which sucks for
people in their 30s who are quite talented....

though that one guy who won a couple years ago looks like he is about
50 and was supposedly 28 or so...

anyway kudos to Paul Potts

How come no one has mentioned the greatest of them all:

Jussi Björling.

Apparantly that is what Pavarotti himself thought.

Maybe Paul was able to sing to her and close the deal.

How long would he have lasted on American Idol? Somehow I don't think a homely looking man with bad teeth would last here in the USA, no matter how well he could sing.

Isn't that the plain looking fellow from Sweden that won European Idol or something a few years back? Man - that kid could sing.

I believe you are right. A few years back. Like in around 1935 or so..

So who was the Swedish Kid who won the all Europe idol thing? He did not look the part, but could sing better than anyone who has ever been on the USA version of the show.

I have not the faintest idea. I never watch the Idol shows. IMO they are like a modern version of gladiator tournaments - albeit more silly. I just happened to trip over this Paul Potts.

He isn't from Sweeden, but from Norway. His name is Kurt Nilsen.

I discovered Paul Potts 6 months ago - and posted the same video to the random video thread.
