Who cares what people think, I'm sure most people on the street say "wanker" when they see a Porsche go by anyway - lol.....

I think I like these on ebay from Germany:

Driving gloves came about because the skinny wood steering wheels in use at the time were slippery when dry and even worse if you were sweating. The gloves did give much better grip. My 930 leather steering wheel is nice and fat and sticky. No need for gloves there.

Kurt, I agree with your historical perspective.

I do find that even with a padded leather steering wheel, the leather gloves provide a more firm grip on the wheel.

I analogize the feel to a golf club. Golf grips are much better than they were 40 years ago, but a glove still provides a better grip.

if it's really cold in winter i'll wear them at least until the car gets warmed up. i don't get picked on to my face though, so wouldn't know what others think. since i already have the 'boxer's break' in my right hand, suppose i'd rather hit 'em wearing gloves than without if i had to.. :D

No gloves; but when driving a 930 beasty "balls to the wall" I do think a USDA approved racing jock is as important as seatbelts.

VINMAN 09-25-2007 11:36 AM

Not Really a big fan of gloves for driving. Although I wear my old nomex flight gloves or my OMP gloves in the winter till the car warms up.
I actually think I have less grip on the wheel with gloves on.

Stop lotioning your hands when you get out of your bubble bath and grow come man callouses!

tc-sacto 09-25-2007 01:58 PM

Why stop at gloves

Go for the whole ensemble! ;)

You "pro glove" guys think you really need them while driving on the street?? Your hands are that slippery? Really? WOW!

I use nomex ones on the track in case I need to touch something on fire on my way out the door of the car............

Just my opinion (not worth much I know) but I expect to see little leather gloves on middle aged guys with pornstar mustaches driving Ferrari 308's........... (at pedestrian speeds)

But, to each their own. If you need 'em, buy 'em, don't really matter what anyone else thinks about them. But only get them if you need them, don't foolishly think they look good......

Cheers

Best,

.. . and he crashed. ... bad.

next thread: How to recover steering wheel w/ Velcro. :D

island911 09-25-2007 09:42 PM

Actually, with all the technicolor spandex cyclists around here, at times I do feel that I should drive with racing gloves, full Nomex, Helmet ... maybe some big bright stickers on the car. --just to fit in. ;)

Okay, seriously... maybe get a different steering wheel. I just don't think that another layer of leather(between you and your wheel) is going to help anything that cant be helped by simply changing the wheel surface.

I fantasize about being a little shorter so I could wear an old Prussian helmet with a spike on top. That would be cool.

Yeah, yeah - I know. Truth be told, the hollow spikes on all of the Prussian hemets I've looked at don't fit the point on my head.

Inkadently - have any of you seen the TV documentary (several years ago) where a forensics, or whatever, lab analyzed the crash data and came to the conclusion that Dean was travelling at approx. the posted speed limit and that the car that he collided with pulled out in front of him at a point in time that guaranteed a collision - driving gloves, hyperfast braking reaction time not withstanding?

Sonic dB 09-26-2007 12:16 AM
