Move to NYC?

I was offered a job this past week in manhattan. The job requires nyc residency, and I would have 3 months from my start date (11/19) to relocate. I'm currently in CT, about a 2 hr commute by train which I can hack for the time being. A very cursory look on craigslist shows rents for a 1 or 2 bedroom anywhere from $1,400 to $3,200 (the high end being manhattan). The job is offering some very decent coin where I *could* afford the high end being single w/ no kids, but I'm trying to keep living expenses as low as possible.

Can anyone suggest a safe, decent place to live in one of the 5 boroughs which isn't more than a 30 minute commute from Church St in manhattan, and can possibly accomodate bringing my cars with me?

Thanks in advance.

did you check what "requires NYC residency" allows ?

even NYC municipal workers are allowed some leeway into the hinterlands.

2hr door to door is routine for many commuting into the city.

Forget the boroughs
the smart move right now is Jersey City on the other side of the Hudson.

Including the PATH train to cross the Hudson you can get to Church street in less than 30 minutes

Hoboken but it's in Jersey.

DUMBO is hot right now.

Sheepshead Bay area of Brooklyn.

Forest Hills Queens has some good action at night/weekends.

Pass on Staten Island.

Ronin - yea, this is nyc municipal, 90 days from hire to establish city residency. The 2hr commute is far more than what I'm willing to hack for longer than a month.

...and thanks for the tips stomachmonkey.

Friend of mine started the Five Burros TexMex place over on Austin St.

Margaritas are out of this world.

Awesome jukebox and a great vibe.

If you're willing to do it for the coin, then a move to NY is a no-brainer (although I'm biased). Take a look at the rent in Queens or Brooklyn it's much lower. And if you're willing to put up with about a 45 min commute on the LIRR check out Nassau County, where you can definately find a nice one bedroom under $1k

Do like some people do when they move and intend to buy. Rent a place (even for the $3,200/mo.) and look around while you talk to people there. Then you can get some leads on some places you might like at a price you want. This might work out well unless you have to sign a lease, but maybe even a 6 month lease would be OK.
Frankly I'm surprised rents for 1 & 2 bedroom places in NYC aren't more. I remember a studio was $200/mo. over forty years ago in the village.

My brother works for UN, based out of NYC. He lived there for about 2 years with a similar rent $/mo. He never drove anywhere though? He didn't even bring his car with him; I think adding a couple cars to the mix will be costly there?

I'd suggest doing the 2 hour comute and get your bearings; something good will come up? If it doesn't, I'm sure you could get a variance on the 90 day policy based on you completing your homework?

Good Luck, my wife and I really enjoyed our time in NYC!
Cheers,

Made it to the NY car show while we were there too:
