egad man!

How old are you? I started getting PSA tests every year once I turned 30. A lot less intrusive than the digital exam but you need both.

Thought I'd bring this thread back. I had a kidney stone about 6-8 months ago (my first, I'm 41). It wasn't bad, some stabbing pains in the back but it passed after a few days. Well, I felt those familiar pains again in my flank yesterday and since then, nothing but occasional "twinges". I read the horror stories and I'm waiting for the shoe to drop. I'm doing what I can - tons of water, cranberry juice, etc. My wife is a nurse and says give it a few days.

Don't these things usually pass after a few days or do I have to feel these twinges for weeks and then WHAM!, down on the floor...? Experience from those who've had 'em...

Beer makes me pee like crazy. Drink enough of it and you get the added bonus of less pain.

I passed a stone several years back. I had no idea what was going on and thought I was going to die. Trip to ER in the meat wagon and I was barfing during the ultrasound. It started a week prior with a constant sensation of needing to relieve myself - but no pain. Then one morning wham - on my back in my office. Pain in the lower gut and back. Incredible pain. Broken bones, large puncture wounds, major road rash, all are childs play in comparison.

If you mean pass as come out? not necessarily, The pain is when its going from the kidney to the bladder but once its going down that tube it keeps moving but still can take some time, several hours or longer, you may have what did, the stone starts down then pressure pops it back into the kidney, this could go on for a long time, you will know it when it starts because the pain will not let up, and if that happens the only thing you can do is head to the ER and get hooked up (pain meds) You might want to ask you doctor to order a scan and see what size it is that will kind of tell you how easy or how much pain you gong to be in. Mine were all 4 to 8mm and I have had many. I still have two in there now but they are only grains of sand size but they will grow!

cgarr,

I see what you're saying. Perhaps my stone from six months ago didn't pass afterall? Great. But no pain or problems for over six months? So it's getting bigger in the mean time? Great. Can't relatively small stones pass without much drama?

Not liking this much.

So you didn't pee it out? Sometimes you cant even feel it come out you only here it hit the porcelain. If I get a lot of pain (ER type pain) then stops quickly and think it has pass into the bladder then I will start to strain thru a screen for a few days and see if I can catch it. I did have one get stuck on the way out, that was not so much pain, that was more like pissin razor blades. You ever see Kramer?

The stone I had six months ago - I assume I pissed it out, I hope I did, never saw it. They say if you have more than one than you are likely to have many in the future. Wonderful.

kurt,

I see your a Pilot, do they know about the stone? At first they denied me a medical and was done, I went thru the paperwork process and they decided to review me yearly to get my medical because of my stones.

Hey guys with exeprience, a question. How inherited is the tendency to have these? My Dad passed one or more when he was younger than I am now. I am 53 and have never had any kidney stones....is it likely I would still experience my first one?

For what its worth, it seems I take after my mother in terms of physical issues. My Dad had a number of cardiac events and a stroke leading to his eventual death at 66 after an initial massive heart attack at age 46. I have low cholestrol, low BP, I've been tested numerous times and have had scans indicating ZERO arterial plaque...which my doctor likened to winning the lotto for my family history. I am not a workout nut. I'm active, relatively(?) trim and always a non-smoker but still a bit overweight.
