I believe someone on this thread asked this question. Both toyota and nissan plan on building a new rwd front engine 4 banger setup sometime in the next 2 years. I came across the article in autoblog sometime ago. So maybe there is a hope for a light weight rwd chassis that doesn't cost a bundle.

If you could get out the door with the 135 for under $40k then it would be quite a car. I keep thinking about getting one but I started pricing it out on their website with the same options I have in my VW and I was at $49K. $35K for the car, $15K for options. Heck, if I am going to spend $50K on a car, I am a whole new ball game.

I like this car, it dosen't look that squashed. Of course I have a WRX. I am 6'5" and fit in it just fine.

At $50, that's 1 year old Cayman territory.

Can you a lease a 1 to 2 year old car? I don't want to deal with the maintenance with all the computer fun after the warranty is up with the newer cars anymore.

Plus I wonder where the Cayman would run against the 135 just from a performance aspect. I think the Cayman S is 295 horses and the 135 would is 300 horses.

I'm sure you could. If Porsche won't do it, there are people that will.

I really think the 4 cylinder idea has merit. The diesel idea even better. I think the cars fugly, overweight, and overpriced, but a smaller motor could potentially solve 2 of the 3 problems. Its too bad that BMW didn't sell this as a MINI, then they wouldn't feel that it has to be so "luxury" oriented, and we could have a proper sports sedan.
Am I alone in thinking that a 4 banger is more fun for my daily commute? I love driving my Honda to work and back, because I can use the gears, and it still has way more power than I ever need in a car that doesn't go to the track.

Adding only the important stuff (sport package, 18" wheels, heated seats) my (yeah right) 135i is $38,929. I'm sure it still has way more toys than my Aero. Just think: if you skip the nav system, heated seats, etc, you save money AND weight!

Yes but you think they'd throw in the heated seats. I can turn my damn windshield wipers on and I can park my own car. I don't need those. But the nav and idrive thing might be kinda of cool.

From what I read, avoid BMW i-Drive at all costs.

Hmm, if this is true, I suppose it could change my mind somewhat...

...but then again, if the 130i wasn't a great shake, why would the 135i be much better (besides the obvious horsepower increase).

Really, Clarkson's biggest knock was the price. He wasn't fond of the lack of interior space in the 4-door hatch, but that's not really an issue for the USA. He called it a better driver's car, and faster. What would his opinion be in the 70 HP stronger 135i?
Not taking anything away from the R32, it's a very nice car. Certainly not as trackworthy as the BMW however.

I would say the most appealing part of the 135i is the twin turbo engine - 300hp. It is cheaper German horsepower so to speak. A 99/00 996 has about the same horsepower I believe at 295 and a used one will cost about 30-40k. So for the price range it is a heck of a car.
As to the R32, the car came with 240 HP which is probably a fair comparison to the 130i.

For around $1200, you can put a Vishnu chip in it, and it increases torque by 100 lb/ft and hp by close to the same.
Yeah, 400/400 in a car that small, with a six speed manual, thatsa spicy meatball! |

Well I went to the BMW dealer and took this car for a spin yesterday. This is an awesome car. The power is constantly there and the brakes are absolutely incredible. I am really trying to talk myself out of this but I don't think I am going to be able to.
