If its Howard Agnecy, he's one hell of a nice guy. I do know that he has a couple of 914s. One of them was a white one with a V8 in it. Unfortunately he's no longer with us.

I believe they were testing different shapes for their radar signatures. They were playing cat and mouse with the Soviet Spy satellites by timing their tests between passes overhead by the satellites. They would roll the models in and out of hangers between passes.

If I recall correctly, it was mounted upside down for radar testing and disassembled daily to avoid detection from the satellites.

But apparently Russia still got a really good idea of the profile by the residual heat signature it left on the ground.

Didn't they start putting heaters on top of cardboard silhouettes as well? What a cat and mouse game that became.

My dad was involved on our end of spying on the Soviets with our satellites. They were usually placed in polar orbits so they would pass over the entire globe eventually as the earth rotated below them. In the 60s digital imaging was not developed enough to get high resolution so they used conventional film cameras shooting different film, sensitive to different wave lengths. The IR film could pick up all kinds of heat patterns from objects that were no longer there. Once the film was exposed it was moved to a capsule, ejected to de-orbit and recovered on reentry. Radio frequency data was also recorded by other satellites and "downloaded" to tracking stations to be recorded and later analyzed. Commands to control the satellites were "uploaded" to the birds as they called them. That was the first time I had ever heard the use of those two terms, (upload/download) that now are part of everyday Internet jargon.

^This!

Read "Skunk Works" by Ben R. Rich - second in command in Burbank under Kelly Johnson. He later went on to run it for Lockheed.

First Jew to be in such a sensitive position in this country. He was proud of that. I'm proud of the diversity of this country - today we wouldn't even give it a second thought.

God bless the boys that conceived and built these birds, and those who were brave enough to fly them. And God bless America.

In a book or on a TV program, I saw a very funny example of one of shapes they used... it was like a primitive overhead silhouette of a jet drawn by an 8 year old boy with too-small wings and too-large rear horizontal stabilizers. The Skunk Works guys were obviously having some fun taunting the Soviets.

More here... probably saw the funny mockup on this NatGeo program: Revealed: How Area 51 Hid Secret Craft
