Yes, it was Southern Pacific 4402, a Class GS-1, 4-8-4 built by Baldwin Locomotive workes. It happened in Richvale, California in 1931. Probably the fireman let the water level get too low.
It once looked kind of like this. Same class locomotive on the "Atlantic Lines" in Texas and Louisiana.

Saturday morning a friend of mine asked me if I knew anything about a certain brand of motorcycle. explained to me his tenant had moved out a while back owing him thousands of unpaid rent and had left some things in the building. he goes check and he finds an old motorcycle.. I go check online for information on this bike.. a Royal Pioneer! like the one American Pickers paid $55k for on a recent episode.. supposedly it was one of 3-4 known to still exist.. printed out a picture of a 1910 Royal Pioneer and asked my friend if it looks like this.. yep that's it.. a few small parts missing but in pretty good shape.. I offered him $25 for it but I believe he's hanging on to it for a while. I haven't seen it yet but he says it looks like this one. I told him he better hide it away and get started on the procedure to claim it legally. the previous owner ran off and abandoned it there a couple months ago. if it isn't claimed after 3 months, after a bit of paperwork it's his.

Steam locomotives have pop off valves to release excess steam pressure but they can't cope with the the kind of failure that caused that boiler to explode. When the water level drops to where it does not cover what is called the crown sheet over the fire box, the sheet melts and ruptures. All of a sudden the 250 to 300 pounds of supper heated steam flashes and exits through the hole expanding explosively.
