^^^ that was the first attempt to replace the Merlin with a turbofan.

I took a tour of the Piper plant in Lakeland FL in about 1978 and the this plane was there sitting in the corner. It was a tour with the local Society of Automotive Engineers. The plane got some of the guys on the tour attention and they wanted to know more about it. The guy giving the tour didn't know much about it. I don't have any idea why I remember this....

Maybe you remember because it is a P51. Even though it had been re-engined and beefed up for ground support. Too bad nobody wanted to buy them. I bet it would have served well.
