The Cars: McLaren Can-Am Cars

The 1971 Can-Am M8F car was designed by G. Coppuck and included a number of innovations. It ran with an 8-litre Chevrolet built by McLaren Engines using the new Reynolds all alloy cylinder block. Horsepower was rated in excess of 740.

Trojan production cars for Can-Am were M8FP models in 1972.

Dad had one he bought used, then sold with 275k. That was when it was unheard of in the day. Swears it was the best car he ever owned. Aside from the 55 2 door hardtop he had when my parents first got together. He kicks himself to this day for selling....

Family took priority back then and they needed something practical.

I believe that to be correct as well. However, both he and the early teenager(ish) who was also in the car were fortunate to be alive. Couldn't believe what I was seeing when taking those images.
