I miss seeing those. I never understood why these couldn't be left as they were.

As I understand it, they crumbled into a heap of rubble.

They were finally demolished, and carried off to a local landfill in the late 1990s after a storm had destroyed what was left of them. People were allowed to take whatever remains they wanted from the landfill until what was left was finally run through a wood chipper.
Another shot from 1981.

I bought one of these GL450's once - first year of production, 2007. Had a buddy at MBZ corporate - got a phenomenal price on it AND a discounted 100K warranty for about $4500.

That warranty was the best $$ I ever spent - all four pneumatic struts went south during the warranty, and the compressor was recalled. Many many other little things. Sold it at 110K on the odo - was afraid to own it after that. Wouldn't buy one again.

That said, it was the best riding vehicle I ever owned up till then!

Left front (at least) appears to have failed...

A couple of pics I took in 1981. This is a one-off Ford EXP with a 302 V8 built for stage rally. It had some official Ford backing but was built by a private shop with a sprint car and/or road racing background. The car was heavily promoted in AutoWeek articles and was going to be the latest and greatest. It was a disaster. Horrible suspension and reliability issues. I don't think it ever finished a rally.

My guess is that since you sit in the rear, engine in the front, it's actually a very good weight distribution. Total contact patches front and rear seem to be about the same. Very neutral handling....and a hoot to drive.

One of those is on my 'fun car' list for after retirement (long list thou )

For the love of God, turn your lights on.

I'd be willing to bet that the vast majority of people here are fully aware of this, but it might be something you'd like to show any novice drivers in your household.
