+1 on the fantastic photo.
Here's a close-up. Union Pacific Big Boy 4014, the only 4-8-8-4 remaining and the largest steam locomotive in the world. In Hugo, CO. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() There was a 20 mile long bumper-to-bumper stop-and-go traffic jamb and it was gone

Of the original 25, it's the only one running, having been restored the last couple years. There are still 7 others on display; one about a mile from my home. |

That is a very cool engine.
The biggest engine on Canadian rails was the Selkirk and it was a 2-10-4 non articulated engine. Even that was limited in its usage and range due to the weight of the unit. My old SC.

![]() Hey Bill Is that old 5900 still on display in Calgary? It used to be near the old Mewata Stadium & Armouries. Cheers JB

What I love about these old steamers is that the mechanism is all out there so you can watch it work.

I think it had moved in the early 80s and I remember them putting down temporary track and pulling it along. Took a few days to get there. It is apparently too far gone for restoration and it sits enclosed in a fenced area. I remember as a kid you could climb all over the darn thing along with the Tanks by the Scarcee barracks and the Hawker by Tecumseh. CN had an engine and vintage cars in service a few years ago but not sure if it is still running. It was stored in the private rail car facility downtown and was able to tour it a few years back.
